Fourteen Passengers Perish in Flaming Bus After Collision in Andhra Pradesh
A devastating road accident in Andhra Pradesh's Markapuram district claimed the lives of fourteen passengers and left twenty-eight others injured early Thursday morning. The tragedy unfolded when a private bus collided head-on with a tipper truck, triggering a fire that engulfed both vehicles and trapped passengers inside.
Chronology of a Catastrophe
The semi-sleeper bus, operated by Harikrishna Travels of Hyderabad and registered in Arunachal Pradesh, was traveling from Nirmal in Telangana to Nellore in Andhra Pradesh with forty-one passengers aboard. At approximately 5:45 AM near Rayavaram village, the bus collided with the tipper truck. The impact caused the truck's fuel tank to explode, igniting a blaze that spread rapidly to the bus.
Survivors reported that most passengers were asleep at the time, leaving them with little chance to react. The sensor-operated main door of the bus malfunctioned and locked after the crash, trapping everyone inside. A few quick-thinking passengers smashed windowpanes to create escape routes, while residents from nearby villages rushed to pull others to safety. Tragically, all fourteen fatalities occurred among passengers seated towards the rear of the vehicle.
Maintenance Concerns and Route Decisions
Preliminary investigations indicate a possible "steering-wheel jam" moments before the collision, raising serious questions about the vehicle's maintenance. Survivors revealed the bus had experienced multiple technical glitches during the journey, including an hour-long stop at Yerragondapalem for minor repairs before continuing.
Adding to the scrutiny, the travel company had chosen a less-traveled, narrower route—Hyderabad-Nagarjunasagar-Vinukonda-Markapuram—instead of the main highway via Wadepalli-Dachepalli for business reasons. This marked the fourth instance in six months of a passenger bus catching fire in Andhra Pradesh, highlighting systemic safety issues.
Heroic Acts and Grim Aftermath
Amid the chaos, co-passenger Balaraju emerged as a hero, ignoring his own safety to break several windows and create escape routes for others. "Had he not broken several windows, many more lives would have been lost," one survivor acknowledged.
The fire proved so intense that the bus was reduced to ashes despite firefighters' efforts. The sleeper berths above seats likely hindered escape attempts. Among the deceased were Ambati Anil and his five-month-old son, along with twelve other passengers primarily from Kanigiri, Vinjamur and Udayagiri in Nellore district.
Official Response and Compensation
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan expressed condolences and directed authorities to provide optimal medical care for the injured. Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha, Transport Minister M Ramprasad Reddy, and DGP Harish Kumar Gupta visited the accident site for assessment.
The state government announced compensation of Rs 5 lakh each for victims' families and Rs 2 lakh each for the injured. Prime Minister Narendra Modi sanctioned additional ex gratia payments of Rs 2 lakh for deceased kin and Rs 50,000 for each injured person. President Droupadi Murmu and PM Modi both expressed profound grief over the tragedy.
Officials cautioned the death toll might rise, with several injured passengers hospitalized in critical condition. The bus driver, P Yuvaraju (23), and assistant P Mahendra Reddy (17) escaped with minor injuries.
