Delhi Assembly Standoff: AAP MLAs Stage Protest Outside, Speaker Slams Violation of Parliamentary Decorum
A significant political confrontation unfolded in the national capital on Monday, as Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) legislators staged a vocal protest outside the Delhi Assembly. The demonstration centered on allegations that the Opposition members were being systematically prevented from entering the House to raise critical public issues. In a sharp rebuttal, Speaker Vijender Gupta strongly condemned the protest, labeling it a clear violation of established parliamentary decorum and democratic traditions.
Opposition Accuses BJP of 'Murdering Democracy'
Leading the protest, Leader of Opposition Atishi, accompanied by fellow AAP MLAs, launched a scathing attack on the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Atishi accused the BJP of 'murdering democracy' and actively suppressing the voices of elected representatives chosen by the people of Delhi. The protesting legislators asserted that their fundamental duty to highlight public grievances was being obstructed at the very gates of the Assembly.
They further alleged that police personnel deployed outside the Assembly premises, armed with lathis, were deliberately barring their entry. This, they claimed, represented a deliberate attempt to stifle democratic dissent and accountability.
Civic and Governance Failures Highlighted
Beyond the entry dispute, the AAP leaders used the platform to amplify a series of pressing civic concerns plaguing Delhi. They argued that the city continues to grapple with severe infrastructural and governance challenges, including:
- Widespread potholes and persistent waterlogging following even minor rainfall.
- A critical shortage of essential medicines in government hospitals.
- Significant delays in issuing promised free bus travel cards for women.
Questioning the BJP government's financial stewardship, the MLAs demanded accountability for the previously highlighted budget of Rs 1 lakh crore, asking what tangible outcomes had been delivered for the citizens.
The protest also invoked the recent Palam fire tragedy, with AAP leaders alleging gross administrative failure. They contended that better preparedness and governance could have prevented the loss of nine lives, accusing the ruling party of prioritizing political power over public safety and welfare.
Speaker's Firm Rebuke Inside the House
Responding with equal force inside the Assembly, Speaker Vijender Gupta criticized the Opposition for boycotting the proceedings and choosing to demonstrate outside instead of engaging in constructive parliamentary debate. In a statement issued during the session, he said, "I strongly condemn the protest being carried out outside the House by the Honourable members of the Opposition and the Leader of the Opposition."
Gupta emphasized that the Assembly floor is the constitutionally mandated platform for discussion and dialogue in a democratic system. He termed the Opposition's absence during the crucial Budget Session as "deeply unfortunate," underscoring that their presence is especially vital during the presentation and discussion of the Delhi Budget.
"Protesting outside instead of engaging in discussion is contrary to established parliamentary traditions," he asserted, adding that failing to participate in House proceedings and obstructing the democratic process effectively amounts to "hijacking constitutional institutions."
The Speaker expressed particular regret that the Leader of the Opposition had not attended the House since the previous session, when sensitive issues like the alleged desecration of Sikh Gurus were raised. He also noted that several key reports were tabled on Monday, stressing that the Opposition had a responsibility to present its position on these significant matters.
Labeling the repeated disregard for parliamentary norms as "highly condemnable," Gupta concluded that such actions reflect contempt for the Chair and fundamentally undermine the dignity and functionality of the legislative House.
