Lucknow Resident Forced to Use Wooden Logs as Home Faces Collapse Risk

In a distressing incident highlighting construction safety lapses, a resident of Gomti Nagar in Lucknow has been compelled to place wooden logs inside her home to prevent it from collapsing. The crisis emerged after basement digging on neighboring plots severely affected the structural integrity of her house, raising urgent safety concerns.

Soil Movement and Foundation Threats from Adjacent Excavation

Parveen Talha (IRS Retd.), who resides in Vinay Khand, reported that deep excavation on plots 2/8 and 2/10 caused significant soil movement near her foundation. Although the construction itself is not illegal, Talha alleged that proper safety protocols were ignored during the basement excavation, escalating risks to her property. "As per rules, a two-layered retaining wall should be constructed during deep excavation, but no such precaution has been taken," she emphasized, pointing to regulatory negligence.

Repeated Complaints and Delayed Action by Authorities

Talha stated that she had repeatedly approached the Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) with her grievances, but action was persistently delayed. This inaction forced her to install temporary supports as a stopgap measure. "I have written five letters to the Vice-Chairman of LDA since July 2025, but there has been no reply," she lamented, underscoring the bureaucratic hurdles faced by residents in such emergencies.

After noticing alarming cracks and ongoing soil movement, Talha consulted a civil engineer, who warned that the excavation could critically weaken her house's foundation. Adding to the urgency, a portion of her house, where she operates a free clinic for the needy, was also under imminent threat, compounding the humanitarian and structural crisis.

LDA Intervention and Safety Measures Implemented

Following sustained complaints, LDA officials finally intervened on a recent Sunday, directing the builder to install iron girders near Talha's foundation to prevent further damage. Officials acknowledged that safety during basement excavation is paramount, as improper digging can destabilize nearby structures, leading to potential collapses.

Zonal officer Devansh Trivedi confirmed the civic body's response, stating, "We have taken note of the issue and ensured immediate safety measures at the site. The area will be continuously monitored to prevent any violations and ensure nearby structures remain safe." This monitoring aims to avert future incidents and enforce compliance with construction safety standards.

Broader Implications for Urban Construction Safety

This incident sheds light on broader issues in urban development, where rapid construction often overlooks neighbor safety. The case underscores the need for stricter enforcement of excavation guidelines and prompt governmental action to protect residents from such hazards. As cities expand, ensuring that development does not compromise existing structures becomes increasingly critical to prevent similar emergencies.
