Heavy Rainfall Paralyzes Hyderabad's IT Corridor, Causing Major Traffic Disruptions
Several parts of Hyderabad experienced significant rainfall on Tuesday evening, leading to widespread traffic chaos, particularly along the city's western IT corridor. The unseasonal downpour, accompanied by strong winds and brief hailstorms, caused substantial disruption to daily commutes and infrastructure.
Record Rainfall Measurements Across the City
According to official data from the Telangana State Planning Society (TSPSC), Shaikpet recorded the highest rainfall at 51.3 millimeters, followed closely by Golconda with 37.5 millimeters. Other areas that experienced moderate to heavy rainfall included:
- Gachibowli: 36.8 mm
- Serilingampally (JPN Nagar): 33.3 mm
- Raidurg: 31.5 mm
- Madhapur: 26.8 mm
- Kukatpally and Balanagar: between 24 and 27 mm
- Miyapur: approximately 26.8 mm
Brief hailstorms were also reported in parts of the western corridor, including Kondapur, adding to the challenging weather conditions.
Tree Falls and Traffic Gridlock
The combination of heavy rain and strong winds resulted in more than 14 tree falls across the city, primarily concentrated in Cyberabad and the West Zone of Hyderabad. This vegetation damage led to severe traffic congestion in multiple key areas, including Gachibowli, Kondapur, Madhapur, Miyapur, Hafeezpet, and Yousufguda.
One particularly disruptive incident occurred along the Gachibowli–DLF route, where a fallen tree and electricity pole blocked the road divider. This forced authorities to temporarily close the stretch, creating extensive traffic jams that affected thousands of commuters during evening rush hour.
Official Response and Damage Assessment
Officials confirmed that the strong winds uprooting trees along major corridors caused more significant disruption than the rainfall itself. AV Ranganath, commissioner of the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA), provided details on the cleanup efforts.
"All the fallen trees were attended to immediately by Disaster Response Force teams. About twelve were cleared quickly, with the remaining ones still in progress. Now, all fallen trees have been cleared and traffic is gradually returning to normal," Ranganath stated.
Weather Forecast and Future Precautions
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather forecast for Wednesday, predicting light to moderate rain or thundershowers in isolated areas of Telangana. The IMD has also warned of potential thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds in several districts, including Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, and Khammam.
This weather event serves as a reminder of the increasing frequency of unseasonal rainfall patterns in the region and highlights the importance of robust urban infrastructure and emergency response systems to mitigate disruption during such incidents.
