Puri Police Arrest Man for Fatal Attack on Friend Over Liquor Dispute

In a shocking incident in Puri, police have arrested a man for the murder of his friend following a violent altercation centered around a broken promise of liquor. The accused, identified as Gobinda Paikaray, locally known as Kalu, was taken into custody on Sunday for the crime that occurred the previous day.

Details of the Tragic Night

According to Puri Superintendent of Police Prateek Singh, the events unfolded in the intervening night of Friday and Saturday near Dhobakhala, under the jurisdiction of the Sea Beach police station. Kalu had gathered with his friends, all in their 20s, including Samir Barik (alias Tapu), Babula Behera, Kuna Pradhan, and Kuna Das, after promising them a liquor party.

However, when Kalu failed to deliver on his promise, a heated argument erupted among the group. Some of the friends were already intoxicated and had been eagerly awaiting the liquor. The situation escalated when Barik and Behera snatched Kalu's mobile phone, which infuriated him.

Violent Escalation and Fatal Consequences

In a fit of rage, Kalu rushed to his nearby home and returned armed with a sword. He began attacking his friends indiscriminately, causing the group to scatter in panic. During the chaos, Samir Barik suffered severe injuries to his neck and fell to the ground. Not stopping there, Kalu then picked up a brick and smashed Barik's head, resulting in his immediate death at the scene.

Babula Behera, who was injured in the scuffle, managed to escape and is currently receiving treatment at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack. The other friends involved in the incident were unharmed but traumatized by the violent outburst.

Police Investigation and Arrest

Puri police swiftly responded to the incident, launching an investigation that led to Kalu's arrest on Sunday. SP Prateek Singh emphasized that the murder was a direct result of the liquor-related dispute, highlighting the dangers of alcohol-fueled conflicts. The case underscores ongoing concerns about crime and law enforcement in the region.

Authorities are continuing their probe to ensure all aspects of the case are thoroughly examined, and they have urged the public to report any similar incidents to prevent such tragedies in the future.
