Political Interference Allegations Cloud Maharashtra Medical Council Elections
Former members of the Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) are raising serious allegations of political interference in the council's upcoming elections scheduled for April 26. These elections mark the first such electoral process in a decade, making them particularly significant for the medical regulatory body.
Rival Factions Split Indian Medical Association
The controversy has deeply divided the Indian Medical Association (IMA) into two opposing factions, each asserting itself as the sole legitimate representative of the organization. This internal conflict centers around two competing panels vying for positions in the MMC elections.
On one side is the 'Official IMA MMC Panel,' which receives backing from current state president Dr Santosh Kulkarni. This panel is allegedly supported by the BJP-affiliated Vaidkiya Aghadi, adding a political dimension to the medical dispute. Opposing this is the 'IMA Members MMC Panel,' endorsed by fourteen past presidents and numerous senior members of the association.
Allegations of Protocol Violations and Pressure Tactics
Dr Suhas Pingle, a former MMC member, has accused Dr Kulkarni of bypassing official protocols by scrapping a panel that had been properly vetted in 2025. According to Dr Pingle, there was a clear majority consensus among IMA members to retain that original panel. However, he claims the leadership "arbitrarily" altered eligibility rules and appointed a selection committee composed of newcomers to hand-pick an entirely new group of candidates.
The move proved so contentious that four senior members reportedly walked out of the selection process in protest, highlighting the depth of disagreement within the medical community. Further allegations have emerged from past MMC president Dr Shivkumar Utture, who states that members of the original 2025 panel received threatening phone calls from Vaidkiya Aghadi representatives. These calls allegedly pressured members to abandon their positions and join the newly formed panel instead.
"One member even left because of the pressure," Dr Utture revealed, suggesting that external political forces are actively influencing what should be an independent medical election process.
High-Stakes Elections After Years of Administration
The upcoming elections carry extraordinary significance as the MMC has been operating under a state-appointed administrator since 2022. The council's structure includes nine elected members alongside nine government appointees, creating a system designed to balance the interests of both the medical fraternity and the state government.
This delicate balance makes the election of independent, representative medical professionals crucial for maintaining the council's integrity and effectiveness in regulating medical practice across Maharashtra.
Leadership Denies All Allegations
Dr Santosh Kulkarni has categorically denied all allegations, describing them as baseless while maintaining that his panel remains the only official one. His panel includes an alliance with the Maharashtra State Medical Teachers Association, and he insists that all other candidates are legitimate IMA members.
"Past presidents do not have any authority. I am the Maharashtra state president so the panel I am calling the official panel is indeed an official panel," Dr Kulkarni asserted, defending his position and the legitimacy of his chosen candidates.
The dispute highlights broader tensions within India's medical governance structures and raises important questions about political influence in professional medical organizations. As the election date approaches, the medical community watches closely to see how these allegations will impact the democratic process within one of Maharashtra's most important regulatory bodies.
