Pudukkottai Police Bust Major Drug Ring, Seize Rs 9.6 Crore in Narcotics
In a significant crackdown on narcotics trafficking, the Pudukkottai town police have successfully arrested four individuals and seized a massive haul of narcotic tablets valued at approximately Rs 9.6 crore. The operation, which unfolded over the weekend, has dealt a severe blow to an alleged smuggling network targeting Sri Lanka.
Swift Police Action Leads to Arrests at Fish Market
The breakthrough came when Police Inspector G Sukumaran received a critical tip-off about four suspicious persons loitering in the fish market area of Pudukkottai on Saturday. Acting promptly on the intelligence, Inspector Sukumaran mobilized his team and rushed to the scene.
Upon arrival, the officers encountered the suspects: A Armstrong (33), P Amalraj (37), P Pratap (35), and D Sandhya (36), all hailing from Rameswaram. The individuals were found standing with several cardboard boxes, which immediately raised red flags for the investigating team.
Contradictory Statements and Discovery of Contraband
When questioned by the police, the four accused provided inconsistent and contradictory replies, further deepening suspicions. This prompted the officers to conduct a thorough search of the cardboard boxes in their possession.
The search revealed a staggering cache of illegal narcotics. Inside the boxes, police discovered 4.82 lakh tablets, identified as Pregabalin and Tanydol. Based on current illicit market valuations, the seized drugs are estimated to be worth a whopping Rs 9.64 crore.
Foiled Smuggling Plot and Judicial Custody
District Superintendent of Police Abhishek Gupta provided crucial insights into the operation. He stated that the accused were actively waiting for a vehicle to transport the contraband when they were apprehended. Their intended destination was Sri Lanka, highlighting the transnational nature of the smuggling attempt.
Following their arrest, all four individuals have been remanded to judicial custody. The police are now intensifying their efforts to unravel the broader network behind this illicit operation.
Special Investigation Team Formed
In response to the magnitude of the seizure, authorities have established a special investigation team dedicated to probing this case comprehensively. This team will delve into the supply chain, identify potential accomplices, and examine the intended smuggling routes to Sri Lanka.
The successful operation underscores the vigilance of the Pudukkottai police in combating drug trafficking and protecting regional security. It serves as a stern warning to criminal elements engaged in such illegal activities.
