Bengaluru Silk Board Flyover Shut After Trial Run Reveals Safety Issues
Bengaluru Silk Board Flyover Shut After Trial Run Issues

Bengaluru traffic police on Wednesday closed the newly opened carriageway of the double-decker flyover between Silk Board and Ragigudda Metro station, just a week after it was opened. The decision came after a trial run flagged major safety concerns.

Flyover Closure

The 3.5-kilometer stretch was opened on a trial basis, and the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) now holds the decision on regular traffic. A senior police officer stated that several road safety issues were identified during the trial, prompting the closure.

Safety Concerns

Key issues include a lack of proper signage, with a need for advance signboards for the BTM Layout down ramp. Additionally, rumble strips, speed limit boards, and stricter lane discipline are required to ensure commuter safety.

Possible Reopening

Sources indicate that the flyover may reopen for regular traffic from May 1. Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar is likely to inspect and ride on the new stretch, after which the corridor will be opened on a regular basis.

Project Impact

The flyover had initially eased traffic for commuters traveling from southern Bengaluru towards the Outer Ring Road stretch between K R Pura and Silk Board, following a Rs 530 crore investment by BMRCL.

Public Reaction

A motorist named Badrinath expressed frustration, saying, "Two days ago I took the flyover but on Wednesday I could not use it. Like me, other motorists were also clueless about the closure. If there are any issues, they should fix the problems and, without waiting for a VIP inauguration, allow regular traffic."
