The 547th birth anniversary of Guru Amar Das was marked with devotion and religious fervor across Lucknow on Thursday. Gurdwaras in the city were adorned with flowers, lights, and yellow satin curtains, while devotees gathered to sing kirtans and offer prayers.
Celebrations at Yahiyaganj Gurdwara
At the Yahiyaganj Gurdwara, priests Bhupendra Singh and Surendra Singh recited shabads, and Surendra Singh delivered a discourse on the life and teachings of Guru Amar Das. He noted that the Guru was born in 1479 in Amritsar and became the third Sikh Guru at the age of 73. Guru Amar Das opposed the practice of sati, advocated for widow remarriage and gender equality, and established 22 preaching centers for the Sikh faith. A bhandara was organized for the public, followed by langar.
Events at Mansarovar and Rajajipuram Gurdwaras
At Mansarovar Gurudwara, the head priest spoke about Guru Amar Das's message of selfless service and equality. He highlighted that the Guru promoted the practice of langar and raised his voice against social evils. Kadaprasad and laddoos were distributed as prasad, and langar was served to devotees. Similarly, Rajajipuram Gurudwara saw a large turnout, where devotees offered prayers and were served missi roti and rajma chawal during the bhandara.
Relevance of Guru's Teachings
Jatinder Singh Bagga, a devotee at the gurdwara, remarked, "The teachings of Guru Amar Das are still relevant in today's society." The celebrations concluded with prayers for peace, harmony, and collective well-being.
