Mangaluru SP Orders Strict Action Against Tobacco Sales Near Schools

In a decisive move to protect students, Dakshina Kannada Superintendent of Police Arun K has issued directives to revoke the licenses of shops and commercial establishments found selling cigarettes, tobacco, and other intoxicating substances near schools and colleges across the district. This announcement was made during the district-level Narcotics Coordination Centre Committee meeting held at the Deputy Commissioner's office on Saturday.

Comprehensive Measures to Ensure Drug-Free Environments

The SP emphasized that the education department must obtain detailed reports from all School Development and Monitoring Committees (SDMCs) to guarantee that no smoking or intoxicating activities occur within school premises. Regular awareness programs against drug abuse are mandated for schools and colleges, with officials from various departments tasked to conduct similar initiatives for the public in their respective areas.

To further curb substance abuse, periodic inspections will be carried out in homestays and lodges, while coastal security police are instructed to conduct unexpected checks on boats. Surveillance will also be maintained over parcels in KSRTC buses to prevent illicit trafficking.

Expanding Awareness and Support Systems

In addition to educational institutions, awareness campaigns against intoxicating substances will be extended to industrial units within the district. Enhanced surveillance measures are planned for railway stations and airports to monitor and prevent drug-related activities.

District Health Officer Thimmaiah HR highlighted the availability of a dedicated counselling centre at Wenlock District Hospital in Mangaluru, which assists children addicted to drugs and other substances. He urged parents to utilize this resource for support and rehabilitation.

The meeting was attended by key officials including DCP (law and order) Mithun HN and ACF Mangaluru sub-division Shashikanth S Vibhute, underscoring the collaborative effort to implement these measures effectively.
