A tragic property dispute in Chandigarh has led to a suicide case and the subsequent booking of five individuals for abetment to suicide. The case revolves around a house deal in Sector 52 that turned sour, resulting in alleged harassment and the death of a buyer.
The Disputed Property Transaction
According to a police complaint filed by Anamika Basak Mehra, her husband, Gurpreet Singh, entered into a property agreement with a man named Vikram Singh. On June 18, 2024, Gurpreet purchased a house after receiving assurances from Vikram that the property was legally in his name and completely free from any bank loans or encumbrances.
Feeling secure with the transaction, the family moved into their new home in Sector 52 on June 27, 2024. However, their sense of security was shattered on the very same day they shifted. Vikram's brother, Balwinder Singh, accompanied by others, allegedly arrived at the house and locked it. They claimed that they too had paid money for the same property and had completed the necessary paperwork.
Allegations of Harassment and Threats
The situation quickly escalated into a nightmare for Gurpreet Singh and his family. Anamika's complaint details that the accused, including Balwinder Singh, began repeatedly harassing the family. The core of their alleged harassment involved demands for money and threats to forcibly take over possession of the house.
The family sought help by lodging complaints with the local police. Despite their pleas and official reports, the alleged harassment did not cease. The constant pressure and threats over the disputed ownership of their home created an atmosphere of extreme distress.
Tragic Outcome and Police Action
The prolonged ordeal culminated in a devastating tragedy on August 24, 2024. On that day, Gurpreet Singh allegedly died by suicide at the very house that was the centre of the conflict. He was rushed to the Civil Hospital in Sector 45, where doctors examined him and declared him dead.
Following this tragic incident and based on the allegations in the complaint, the Chandigarh police have registered a case. Five persons have been officially booked for abetment to suicide. The police are investigating the serious allegations that the accused harassed Gurpreet Singh by claiming Vikram had mortgaged the house to multiple parties, leading to immense mental agony.
This case highlights the severe human cost that can arise from property disputes and alleged illegal harassment. The investigation is ongoing to determine the full sequence of events and the culpability of those charged.
