Irfan Pathan Points to Rinku Singh's Form as Major KKR Challenge for IPL 2026
Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan has identified batter Rinku Singh's recent form as a significant issue that Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) must address ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Pathan noted a decline in Rinku's performances following his breakout 2023 campaign, highlighting concerns over his ability to capitalize on opportunities.
Rinku Singh's Performance Dip and World Cup Struggles
Pathan emphasized that Rinku Singh's 2023 season was exceptional, where he amassed 474 runs in 14 innings at an average of 59.25 and a strike rate of 149.52, including four half-centuries. However, since then, his output has dropped sharply, with only 374 runs in 22 innings at an average of 23.37 and a highest score of 38 not out.
"He will have to maintain his standard and maximise the opportunities he gets," Pathan stated, referencing Rinku's failure to make an impact during the recent T20 World Cup. In that tournament, Rinku managed just 24 runs across five innings, further underscoring his struggles on the international stage.
The former cricketer pointed out that KKR's opening match against five-time champions Mumbai Indians on March 29 in Mumbai will be a crucial test for Rinku, whose form could be pivotal for the team's success this season.
Varun Chakravarthy's Confidence Issues and Path to Recovery
In addition to Rinku Singh, Pathan discussed spinner Varun Chakravarthy's dip in form during the T20 World Cup. Varun started strongly with nine wickets in four group stage matches at an economy rate just over 5, but his performance declined in the later stages, where he took only five wickets in five matches from the Super Eight to the final, with his economy rate doubling.
Pathan expressed confidence in Varun's ability to bounce back, citing his past successes in the IPL and the supportive environment at Kolkata's home ground. "With the good memories he has in Kolkata, perhaps in a slightly different atmosphere, he might perform even better," he remarked.
Last season, Varun was the seventh-highest wicket-taker with 17 scalps at an average of 22.52 and an economy of 7.66. Overall, in 83 matches for KKR, he has taken 99 wickets at an average of 23.74, including two four-wicket hauls and a best of 5/20.
Key Takeaways for KKR's IPL 2026 Campaign
- Rinku Singh needs to rediscover his 2023 form to maximize his batting opportunities.
- Varun Chakravarthy requires confidence-building strategies to overcome his recent slump.
- KKR's management must address these player-specific challenges to enhance team performance.
As the IPL 2026 season approaches, all eyes will be on how KKR tackles these issues, with Pathan's insights shedding light on the critical areas for improvement.
