Ashwin Backs RCB for IPL Title Defence, Praises Squad Depth and Balance
Ashwin Endorses RCB's IPL Title Defence, Highlights Squad Strength

Ashwin Confident in RCB's Ability to Defend IPL Title

Indian cricket star Ravichandran Ashwin has issued a powerful early endorsement for Royal Challengers Bengaluru's upcoming IPL title defence. Speaking on his popular YouTube channel, Ashwin insisted the franchise has meticulously assembled a squad with the depth and balance necessary to secure another IPL crown within the next couple of seasons. This comes after RCB spectacularly ended their agonizing 17-year title drought in the 2025 season, a historic victory that now places them under immense pressure as defending champions entering IPL 2026.

Strategic Rebuild Creates Championship-Caliber Roster

The 2025 mega auction marked a pivotal moment for RCB, as the franchise opted for a significant strategic overhaul. They retained only three core players: legendary batsman Virat Kohli, middle-order mainstay Rajat Patidar, and pace bowler Yash Dayal. This bold move allowed them to rebuild their roster from the ground up, bringing in crucial additions that transformed the team's structure.

Key acquisitions included explosive wicketkeeper-batsman Phil Salt, dynamic finisher Tim David, veteran seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and the reliable Josh Hazlewood. This comprehensive rebuild created a far more balanced and versatile squad, directly contributing to the franchise's long-awaited maiden IPL triumph. Ashwin emphasized that this strategic shift has fundamentally altered RCB's identity, moving them away from a reliance on individual superstars.

Ashwin Praises Unprecedented Squad Depth and Flexibility

In his detailed analysis, Ashwin highlighted the exceptional depth and balance within the RCB squad, noting it no longer depends solely on one or two marquee players. "RCB can realistically add another IPL title in the next two years with this current squad," Ashwin stated confidently. "Winning the IPL is an incredibly difficult challenge, but the building blocks they have assembled, along with the quality of like-for-like replacements available, positions them perfectly for sustained success."

He specifically praised how the management has successfully addressed historical weaknesses in the team's combination. "The manner in which they have identified and filled the previous holes in their lineup is commendable. This is a complete, well-rounded package that has all the tools to consistently finish in the top two positions during the league stage," Ashwin added.

Foreign Contingent and Tactical Flexibility Highlighted

Ashwin singled out RCB's overseas players as potentially the strongest contingent in the entire tournament. "With players like Phil Salt, the promising Jacob Bethell, the powerful Tim David, and the versatile Romario Shepherd, this is arguably the best group of four foreigners any team could hope for. It ranks among the very best in the competition," he remarked.

Interestingly, Ashwin suggested that Josh Hazlewood's current injury, which leaves his availability uncertain for the start of IPL 2026, might actually benefit RCB tactically. "In all honesty, this situation could be a blessing in disguise for the franchise. If Hazlewood is unavailable and there are concerns about Phil Salt's form, they have the flexibility to field both Salt and Bethell. When Hazlewood eventually returns to full fitness, the team management will have a much clearer picture of player form and can make informed selection decisions accordingly," he explained.

Bowling Resources and Probable Playing XI

The veteran off-spinner also commended the flexibility within RCB's bowling attack. "If the bowling unit is conceding too many runs, they have the option to leave out Mangesh Yadav and bring in Jacob Duffy or a fit-again Josh Hazlewood. They possess a squad capable of conquering home conditions at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium and effectively handling the inevitable ups and downs with both bat and ball throughout a demanding tournament," Ashwin noted.

Based on current availability, Ashwin proposed a probable RCB starting XI for IPL 2026:
