Sibsagar's Political Battle: NDA's Struggle in Assam's Historic Ahom Heartland
Once the capital of the Ahom kingdom, which ruled large parts of Assam for an impressive 600 years, the prestigious Sibsagar constituency has never been a stronghold for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Even after the Modi wave swept through Assam, the saffron party has consistently failed to secure victory in Sibsagar over the past decade.
A Tricky Electoral Scenario
After being defeated by Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi, a prominent Ahom leader, in the last election, the NDA now faces a complex and challenging situation in Sibsagar. In a surprising twist, BJP and its alliance partner AGP are contesting against each other, as well as against the incumbent MLA Akhil Gogoi, creating a multi-cornered fight that could reshape the political landscape.
Voter Aspirations for Iconic Status
Voters in Sibsagar express a strong desire for the constituency to receive the iconic status it truly deserves. This sentiment has been heightened by the Centre's announcement, made several years ago, to develop Sivasagar as one of the country's top five iconic archaeological sites. Sivasagar district is renowned for its Ahom-era historic monuments, including the Rang Ghar, one of Asia's oldest surviving amphitheatres, which stands as a testament to the region's rich heritage.
Sitting MLA Akhil Gogoi has pledged to do everything possible to make Sivasagar iconic. "I have been the most vocal MLA. Let our government come, Sibsagar constituency will sparkle like a jewel, just like it was during the glorious days of Ahom rule," said Akhil, emphasizing his commitment to revitalizing the area's historical significance.
Concerns Over Development and Tourism
Ratna Mohan Das, a voter from Sibsagar, highlighted the need for improved facilities. "We want Sibsagar to be a major tourist attraction in upper Assam. The facilities at the historic monuments are not yet world class. An iconic status remains a distant dream," he stated, pointing out the gap between potential and current infrastructure.
Akhil Gogoi's Confidence and Regional Pride
As a key face of the opposition alliance with Congress, Akhil Gogoi asserted that the people of Sivasagar possess a strong sense of self-respect. He argued that BJP cannot win the seat merely through beneficiary schemes. "Sibasagar is the centrepoint of Assamese regionalism. People are proud of its heritage and history, and that is why they do not feel afraid to vote against the ruling party. That happened when I won last time," Akhil added, underscoring the deep-rooted cultural identity that influences voter behavior.
Historical Context and Electoral Legacy
Sibsagar has a storied political history, having elected veteran CPI leader Pramod Gogoi multiple times. It also sent former Speaker late Pranab Gogoi to the assembly. Pranab Gogoi was known for his differences with former CM Tarun Gogoi while trying to implement the Assam Accord, and he made significant efforts to define who qualifies as an "Assamese," reflecting the constituency's role in broader regional debates.
Key Candidates and Strategies
Akhil Gogoi predicted that AGP candidate and sitting Amguri MLA Pradip Hazarika might secure a few thousand votes, but his main fight is likely to be against BJP candidate Kushal Duwari. Kushal, a surrendered ULFA leader who was once a figure of terror during the peak of the insurgency, represents a controversial choice for the BJP.
After delimitation, Sibsagar has undergone boundary changes, but Ahoms still constitute the largest voter group at an estimated 32%, followed by other general caste voters at around 28-30%. With approximately 2.09 lakh voters, the demographic composition plays a crucial role in the election dynamics.
Kushal Duwari, who is an Ahom, contrasted with Pradip Hazarika who is not, claimed that only he can defeat Akhil Gogoi. "I worked hard to build BJP's organisation in Sibsagar over the last four years," said Kushal. He highlighted his efforts in implementing government schemes related to the development of 'namghars', as well as two major beneficiary initiatives—Orunodoi and the Mahila Udyamita Scheme. "My effort will be to bring government schemes directly from the Chief Minister," Kushal added, positioning himself as a conduit for development.
AGP's Confidence and Political Maneuvering
AGP working president Keshab Mahanta expressed certainty about victory in Sibsagar. "Pradip Hazarika has been fielded to defeat Akhil Gogoi. It was a political strategy to field both AGP and BJP candidates in Sibsagar," said Mahanta, indicating a calculated move to split the opposition vote and strengthen their chances in the contentious constituency.
