The ambitious restoration of Nagpur's iconic Futala musical fountain is progressing with a significant infrastructure overhaul, involving the installation of nearly 74,000 meters (74 kilometers) of specialized cabling. Officials have confirmed that the work is being executed in carefully planned phases to ensure systematic completion.
Expanded Cable Scope and Current Progress
Initial estimates had projected only about 4 kilometers of optical fiber cable (OFC), but the revised project scope has expanded dramatically. The comprehensive cable network now includes both 4-core and 8-core industrial power cables, accounting for the substantial increase in total length. Remarkably, this expanded scope has been accommodated without any increase to the sanctioned project budget of Rs10 crore.
In addition to the power cables, the project requires 11,000 meters of encoder cables, which are essential for transmitting critical operational data. These specialized cables relay real-time information about pump positions and operational status directly to the master control room, enabling precise synchronization of the fountain's displays.
Officials from MahaMetro have reported substantial progress in material procurement. To date, they have received:
- 23,800 meters of the required 4-core cable
- 23,000 meters of the necessary 36,500 meters of 8-core cable
The remaining 13,500 meters of 8-core cable are expected to arrive in batches over the coming weeks, ensuring continuous workflow.
Installation Methodology and Site Work
"Installation has begun, with trenching and ducting underway across the entire site," confirmed officials involved in the project. The cable network is being laid using a sophisticated approach that involves both underground and underwater placement to seamlessly integrate with the fountain's complex electrical, signaling, and synchronization systems.
