Ludhiana Implements Daytime Ban on Heavy Vehicles at Sahnewal Chowk to Enhance Safety
In a decisive move to address severe traffic issues and prevent further loss of life, the Ludhiana administration has issued a written order prohibiting the movement of heavy vehicles at the Sahnewal main chowk and market during daytime hours. This restriction, effective from March 27 to March 31, 2026, aims to regulate traffic flow and ensure public safety in the area.
Administrative Order Details and Exemptions
SDM Jasleen Bhullar of Ludhiana (East) stated that the ban on heavy vehicles, including trucks, dumpers, tippers, and container trucks, will be enforced from 7 am to 8 pm daily. Movement of such vehicles will only be permitted from 8 pm to 7 am. The order exempts emergency vehicles such as police cars, fire brigades, and ambulances, as well as vehicles carrying essential commodities and those with written permission from the district administration.
The Commissioner of Police in Ludhiana has been tasked with ensuring strict implementation and enforcement of this order to prevent any violations.
Background: Fatal Accidents and Traffic Chaos
This action comes in response to a series of tragic incidents where heavy vehicles have claimed several lives in Ludhiana. Recent fatalities include a 60-year-old security guard and a 17-year-old girl named Sonali, both crushed under the tires of heavy vehicles on Thursday. Earlier, 19-year-old Nikhil Garg also lost his life in a similar accident.
Residents have long complained about heavy vehicles entering the town illegally, often driving at high speeds and causing significant traffic congestion. The absence of effective restrictions had left the area in a state of chaos, with safety boards being ignored and inadequate checks at entry points.
Public Reaction and Future Implications
Local residents have welcomed the administration's intervention, expressing hope that the order will be implemented rigorously. One resident remarked, "It's good that the administration woke up from its deep slumber. Now, as the order has been passed, I hope that it is implemented in letter and in spirit."
This temporary measure highlights ongoing efforts to improve traffic management and public safety in Ludhiana, potentially paving the way for more permanent solutions to prevent accidents and reduce congestion in the future.
