KTC Protests Diesel Price Hike, Ensures Goa Bus Services Continue

Goa's Kadamba Transport Corporation Decries Unfair Diesel Price Increase

In a significant development affecting public transport in Goa, the Kadamba Transport Corporation (KTC) has voiced strong objections to a sudden and sharp rise in diesel prices at one of its designated fuel stations. The corporation has labeled this hike as "unfair" but has simultaneously reassured the public that all bus services across the state will continue to operate without any interruptions or suspensions.

Chairman Details the Price Disparity and Strategic Shift

KTC chairman Ulhas Tuenkar addressed the issue on Thursday, revealing that the corporation has been compelled to alter its refuelling approach. He explained that the specific petrol pump, which previously charged KTC buses the same rates as other outlets throughout Goa, has now increased the price exclusively for KTC buses to Rs 110 per litre. In stark contrast, private bus operators are still being charged Rs 88.2 per litre at the same facility.

"The Rs 22 hike is unfair," Tuenkar emphasized, highlighting the substantial disparity. As a direct consequence, KTC has initiated a shift to refuel its buses at alternative petrol pumps that offer standard, more reasonable rates. This logistical adjustment is aimed at mitigating the financial impact of the price increase while maintaining operational efficiency.

Commitment to Uninterrupted Public Transport Services

Despite the challenges posed by this price hike and the necessary changes in refuelling logistics, the corporation has firmly stated that there has been no adverse impact on public transport services. Tuenkar reiterated the corporation's dedication to serving the community, asserting, "Our objective is to serve the people, and therefore we will not suspend any services. Our buses are operating at regular timings." This assurance is crucial for maintaining public trust and ensuring smooth daily commutes for residents and tourists alike.

Context of Fuel Demand Surge and Panic Buying in Goa

The situation unfolds against a backdrop of heightened fuel demand across Goa, driven by widespread panic buying triggered by rumors of an impending shortage. However, officials and industry bodies have consistently clarified that there is no actual fuel scarcity, and supply chains remain stable and robust. Tuenkar acknowledged the increased rush at petrol pumps but maintained that KTC's operations remain unaffected for the time being.

"There is a rush as people are panic buying fuel, but we have confirmation that there is no shortage," he said, urging calm among the public. This context underscores the importance of accurate information dissemination to prevent unnecessary disruptions in the transport sector and broader economy.

In summary, while KTC navigates the financial strain of an unfair diesel price hike, its proactive measures and steadfast commitment ensure that Goa's public transport network remains reliable and uninterrupted, even amid local fuel-related anxieties.
