Kotturpuram Residents Voice Infrastructure Demands Ahead of Elections
Residents of Kotturpuram in Chennai have put forth a series of critical infrastructure demands as election season approaches. Key issues include the urgent need to upgrade aging Metrowater pipelines, address traffic congestion, and prevent untreated sewage from flowing into the Adyar river.
Traffic and Road Safety Concerns
Local communities from areas such as Kottur Gardens, Lake View Road, and Surya Nagar have actively engaged with contesting candidates and party representatives to highlight their priorities. A major point of discussion is the installation of traffic signals or deployment of personnel at crucial junctions, including Kottur Gardens and the intersection of Pondicherry Road and Ellaiamman Koil Street.
Visalakshi N, a resident, emphasized the need for a new road under the Kotturpuram bridge. "This would benefit approximately 2,000 families who are set to occupy new housing board tenements, providing them with easier access to Gandhi Mandapam Road," she explained.
Environmental and Health Issues
Residents have raised significant concerns about environmental degradation and public health. The mosquito menace, exacerbated by a non-functional pumping station near the Kottur Urban Forest, requires immediate attention. Additionally, poor drainage along roads adjoining Karunanidhi Street has been a persistent issue since the commencement of new stormwater drain work several months ago.
Rajagopal, an executive committee member of the Kottur Gardens residents association, stressed the importance of preventing sewage discharge into the Adyar river. "The government must take decisive steps to stop untreated sewage from draining into the river, which often overflows onto nearby roads, causing further inconvenience," he stated.
Utility and Infrastructure Upgrades
Beyond traffic and environmental concerns, residents have called for improvements in utility infrastructure. Their demands include:
- Ensuring safe and well-preserved EB distribution boxes and cables.
- Removing unused cables that clutter platforms and roads.
- Relocating electrical poles that obstruct pedestrian pathways and roadways.
These upgrades are seen as essential for enhancing safety and accessibility in the neighborhood. The use of MLA or smart city funds has been proposed as a viable solution for financing the pipeline upgrades and other infrastructure projects.
As elections draw near, the voices of Kotturpuram residents underscore the pressing need for sustainable development and improved urban planning in Chennai. Addressing these demands could lead to significant enhancements in quality of life and environmental protection for the community.
