KBC-Fame Tehsildar Arrested in Major Flood Relief Scam, Supreme Court Denies Bail

A woman tehsildar who rose to national prominence after winning Rs 50 lakh on the popular television quiz show Kaun Banega Crorepati has been arrested in connection with a significant flood relief scam amounting to Rs 2.5 crore in Madhya Pradesh. Officials confirmed that Amita Singh Tomar was taken into custody from her residence in Gwalior, marking a dramatic fall from grace for the former revenue official.

Details of the Arrest and Allegations

Tomar was apprehended on Thursday by a police team led by Baroda Sub Divisional Officer of Police Avneet Sharma. The arrest stems from alleged irregularities that occurred in 2021 within the Baroda tehsil of Sheopur district. According to authorities, she had been removed from her position as tehsildar of Vijaypur just a day prior by Collector Arpit Verma, following suspicions of her involvement in the fraudulent scheme.

Superintendent of Police Sudhir Kumar Agarwal provided further insights, stating that Tomar had been absent from her duties, prompting a police investigation that ultimately traced her to Gwalior. She has since been lodged in a jail in neighbouring Shivpuri after being produced in court.

Legal Proceedings and Rejected Appeals

In a significant legal development, Tomar's attempts to secure anticipatory bail were thwarted at the highest levels. She had filed appeals in both the High Court and the Supreme Court, but both were rejected, clearing the path for her arrest. This underscores the seriousness of the charges and the judicial system's stance on corruption cases.

The scam, which involves the alleged transfer of Rs 2.5 crore into fake bank accounts for embezzlement purposes, has seen widespread repercussions. So far, 22 patwaris (revenue officials) and one tehsildar have been arrested, with a total of 110 individuals named in the First Information Report (FIR). The case is currently under investigation by the SDOP of Baroda, highlighting the extensive nature of the probe.

Background: From KBC Fame to Legal Troubles

Amita Singh Tomar gained nationwide attention as a contestant on Kaun Banega Crorepati, hosted by legendary actor Amitabh Bachchan, where she secured a prize of Rs 50 lakh. Her arrest now contrasts sharply with her earlier public image, drawing attention to issues of corruption within government departments.

This case not only highlights individual misconduct but also raises broader concerns about the integrity of flood relief distribution systems in India. As the investigation continues, it serves as a stark reminder of the legal consequences facing public officials involved in fraudulent activities.
