Katraj Zoo Implements Comprehensive Summer Strategy for 380 Animals

As temperatures soar in Pune, the Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park, commonly known as Katraj Zoo, has rolled out an extensive summer care plan to ensure the comfort and well-being of its 380 animal residents. The zoo authorities are proactively addressing the challenges posed by the scorching heat with a multi-faceted approach designed to keep the animals calm and cool.

Hydrotherapy and Cooling Systems for Large Mammals

Elephants at the zoo are enjoying the benefits of hydrotherapy, receiving cold-water baths twice daily to help them regulate their body temperature. Similarly, sambar deer and tigers have access to specially maintained water ponds where they can cool off during the hottest parts of the day. For the big cats, including lions and tigers, high-pressure mist foggers, air coolers, and sprinklers have been installed across their enclosures to create a more bearable environment.

Innovative Treats and Visitor Amenities

In a creative twist, sloth bears and monkeys are being treated to special "ice cakes" made from frozen fruit and honey, providing both hydration and enrichment. Meanwhile, the zoo has not forgotten its human visitors. New additions include additional drinking water stations, shaded resting sheds, and mist-cooled walkways to enhance the visitor experience during the summer months.
