Karnataka Deputy CM Defends Congress MLAs' Demands for VIP IPL Tickets
In a recent development that has sparked controversy, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has publicly defended demands by Congress legislators for VIP tickets to Indian Premier League (IPL) matches. Speaking to reporters on Friday, Shivakumar asserted that the Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) are entitled to such privileges as they are part of the government.
Shivakumar's Statement on Ticket Allocation
Shivakumar emphasized that he would take up the matter with the relevant authorities to ensure accommodation for the MLAs. "The MLAs have the right because they are part of the government. I will speak to the chairman to see that our MLAs are accommodated," he stated. He also took a swipe at political opponents, adding, "Let Tejasvi Surya give gyaan to his party members."
Congress MLAs Voice Their Concerns
The remarks follow vocal calls from Congress MLA Vijayanand Kashappanavar, who suggested that each legislator should receive at least five IPL tickets. He argued that elected representatives are "VIPs" who should not have to wait in line for access to such events.
Another Congress leader, Shivashankarappa, criticized the alleged lack of ticket access, pointing to an upcoming IPL match scheduled for the 28th of this month. "Karnataka State Cricket Association has not provided the tickets for the MLAs, ministers, and their families. They are taking all the facilities from the government. But they are not respecting the MLAs," he said.
Shivashankarappa further accused the association of engaging in black marketing of tickets, stating, "They are not issuing the tickets. They are selling it in black. One ticket, which costs 5,000 rupees, we are buying it for 35,000 rupees."
IPL Schedule and Broader Political Context
The Board of Control for Cricket in India has announced that the first phase of the Indian Premier League 2026 will be held from 28 March to 12 April, adding urgency to the ticket allocation issue.
Separately, Shivakumar also commented on his recent visit to Assam ahead of the assembly elections scheduled for 9 April. He expressed strong confidence that the Congress party would form the next government in the state. "I am very confident that there will be a change in Assam and a Congress government will come to power," he declared.
He labeled the current BJP-led administration as the "most corrupt" in Assam's history and criticized the BJP over recent bypoll claims, noting, "They could not retain the CM's son's seat."
