Congress Leader Gaurav Gogoi Intensifies Upper Assam Campaign with Sharp Critique of BJP Government
In a vigorous campaign push across Upper Assam, All India Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi on Thursday delivered a series of impactful addresses in the Teok constituency. The political leader was actively campaigning in support of Congress candidate Pallabi Saikia Gogoi, utilizing the platform to launch pointed criticisms against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Confident Congress Pitch and Critique of Unfulfilled Promises
Speaking directly to assembled voters, Gogoi expressed strong confidence in the Congress party's prospects for victory in Teok. He emphasized the deep-rooted and enduring relationship that the Congress has historically maintained with the local populace. The APCC president contrasted this with what he described as the empty promises of the BJP.
"The BJP lured the people with grand promises of 'Achhe Din' or good days, but that reality has never materialized for the common citizen," Gogoi asserted. "Instead of improvement, the condition of ordinary people has visibly deteriorated under the current BJP administration."
Allegations of Institutional Decline and Social Problems
Gogoi leveled serious allegations regarding the systematic decline of public institutions and the exacerbation of social issues. He claimed that government-run facilities and services were being shut down in rapid succession across the state.
"We are witnessing a troubling trend where essential government institutions are closing one after another, while simultaneously, destructive problems like widespread liquor consumption and drug abuse are rising alarmingly," the Congress leader stated.
He highlighted critical shortages affecting daily life, including severe drinking water scarcity and significant difficulties in accessing basic necessities such as fuel and cooking gas. Gogoi defined governance in stark terms, stating, "True governance is not merely about distributing ₹1,250 for attending political party meetings. Authentic governance is fundamentally about ensuring quality education, building robust rural infrastructure, and effectively controlling the prices of essential commodities."
Direct Criticism of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma
Gogoi specifically targeted Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, accusing him of profoundly misplaced governance priorities. "Under this administration, government schools are being systematically closed down while liquor shops are being opened at an alarming rate," he charged.
He painted a concerning picture of the education sector, noting, "Children are now forced to travel long, arduous distances to attend school. This has led to a proliferation of private educational institutions, inevitably resulting in poor students from marginalized backgrounds dropping out of the education system entirely."
The Congress leader also turned his attention to the healthcare system, flagging the poor and deteriorating state of government hospitals. He alleged a critical lack of both doctors and essential medicines, forcing patients to seek expensive treatment at private medical facilities.
Mockery of Flood Management and Land Rights Issues
On the perennial issue of floods in Assam, Gogoi openly mocked claims made by Union ministers. He referenced suggestions that digging large ponds would solve the state's chronic flooding problem, stating, "Such simplistic proposals only reveal the lack of seriousness and genuine commitment the BJP holds towards addressing Assam's most pressing and recurrent issues."
Gogoi further raised the issue of land rights, alleging that numerous poor families continue to lack proper land pattas (documents) despite promises made under the government's Basundhara scheme. He presented a stark contrast, claiming, "While many poor families wait for their rightful land documents, it is alleged that a single, powerful family owns an astonishing 12,000 bighas of land."
Final Appeal to Voters
Concluding his campaign pitch with a direct appeal, Gaurav Gogoi urged the voters of Teok not to be misled by what he termed as the BJP's hollow promises and political rhetoric. "The path to real, tangible solutions for the people's problems lies in bringing the Congress party back to power," he asserted, framing the upcoming election as a choice between failed governance and a return to proven leadership.
