DMK Distributes 11 Central Tamil Nadu Constituencies to Alliance Partners for Assembly Polls

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has strategically allocated a total of 11 assembly constituencies in central Tamil Nadu to its various political allies, according to the official candidate list released on Saturday. This allocation includes several key seats that the DMK itself had contested during the previous 2021 assembly elections, marking a significant shift in electoral strategy for the upcoming polls.

Congress Secures Three Prominent Constituencies

The Indian National Congress (INC) has been awarded three important constituencies in this allocation. These include Thuraiyur in Trichy district, Mayiladuthurai, and Aranthangi in Pudukottai district. All three seats represent significant electoral territories where the Congress will now carry the alliance banner.

MMK Receives Two Constituencies with Notable Changes

The Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MMK) has been allocated two constituencies: Manapparai and Nagapattinam. There has been a notable shift in these allocations compared to previous arrangements. Nagapattinam has moved from the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) to MMK, while Papanasam constituency has been transferred from MMK to the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML).

MMK president and incumbent MLA from Papanasam, M H Jawahirullah, will now contest from Nagapattinam instead. Meanwhile, P Abdul Samad, the sitting MLA from Manapparai, will re-contest from that constituency on behalf of MMK.

CPM Gets Two Reserved Constituencies

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has received two reserved constituencies in this allocation: Kilvelur in Nagapattinam district and Gandharvakottai in Pudukottai district. Both these constituencies have been retained by CPM from the 2021 elections, indicating continuity in the party's representation in these areas.

Other Allies Receive One Seat Each

Four additional alliance partners have been allotted one constituency each:

  • The Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) receives Sirkazhi in Mayiladuthurai district
  • The Communist Party of India (CPI) gets Thiruthuraipoondi in Tiruvarur district
  • The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) obtains Papanasam in Thanjavur district
  • The Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) receives Nannilam in Tiruvarur district

Continuity and Changes in Seat Distribution

Several constituencies show continuity from the 2021 elections, with the same parties retaining their seats. These include:

  1. Manapparai
  2. Mayiladuthurai
  3. Kilvelur
  4. Thiruthuraipoondi
  5. Gandharvakottai

However, the allocation also reveals strategic shifts, particularly with Papanasam moving from MMK to IUML and Nagapattinam transferring from VCK to MMK. The DMK's decision to allocate seats it previously contested itself—including Thuraiyur, Sirkazhi, and Nannilam—to alliance partners represents a calculated move to strengthen the coalition's overall prospects in central Tamil Nadu.

This comprehensive seat-sharing arrangement demonstrates the DMK-led alliance's coordinated approach to the upcoming assembly elections, balancing continuity with strategic adjustments to maximize electoral success across central Tamil Nadu's diverse constituencies.
