DMK Unveils Candidate List for Central Tamil Nadu Assembly Seats
The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has finalized its electoral strategy for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, announcing that it will contest in 30 out of the 41 constituencies in the central region of the state. This decision underscores the party's focused approach to securing a stronghold in this crucial area, which is pivotal for overall electoral success.
Renominations and Replacements in Key Constituencies
In a move balancing experience and renewal, the DMK has renominated candidates in 18 of these seats, ensuring continuity with sitting MLAs who have established local support. However, in a significant shift, the party has denied tickets to at least eight sitting MLAs, opting instead for fresh faces in several constituencies. This strategy aims to inject new energy and address potential anti-incumbency sentiments.
Notable renominations include Municipal Administration Minister K N Nehru, who will contest for the seventh time and fourth consecutive term from Trichy West, and School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, seeking a third term from Thiruverumbur. Other returning MLAs are Inigo Irudayaraj from Trichy East and S Kathiravan from Mannachanallur.
Introduction of New Candidates and District-Wise Breakdown
The DMK has introduced new candidates in constituencies like Srirangam, Lalgudi, and Musiri, where S Durairaj, Tha. Parivallal, and N S Karunairaja replace sitting MLAs M Palaniyandi, A Soundarapandian, and N Thiyagarajan, respectively. These new candidates, all around 50 years old, are graduates and senior DMK functionaries, bringing a blend of youth and party loyalty.
In Thanjavur district, Higher Education Minister Govi Chezhian is contesting for the fourth time from Thiruvidaimaruthur (SC). A notable switch is former AIADMK minister R Vaithilingam, who won from Orathanadu in 2021 on an AIADMK ticket but has now been fielded by the DMK in the same constituency. Other re-contesting candidates in Thanjavur include MLAs 'Sakkottai' G Anbazhagan from Kumbakonam, Durai Chandrasekaran from Thiruvaiyaru, K Annadurai from Pattukkottai, and N Ashok Kumar from Peravurani. Corporation mayor Sun Ramanathan replaces T K G Neelamegam in Thanjavur.
Moving to Tiruvarur district, Industries Minister T R B Rajaa seeks a fourth consecutive term from Mannargudi, while MLA Poondi K. Kalaivanan re-contests from Tiruvarur. In Mayiladuthurai district, MLA 'Nivetha' M Murugan is re-contesting from Poompuhar. Nagapattinam district sees fresher M M Pugazhendhi fielded from Vedaranyam.
In Karur district, Asi M Thiagarajan will contest from Karur, and MLA 'Monjanur' R Elango re-contests from Aravakurichi. New tickets have been awarded to S K Raja and Suriyanur A Chandiran in Krishnarayapuram (SC) and Kulithalai, replacing sitting MLAs K Sivagama Sundari and R Manickam, respectively.
Perambalur district features Transport Minister S S Sivasankar re-contesting from Kunnam for his fifth overall term, while S D Jayalakshmi has been fielded from Perambalur (SC) in place of sitting MLA M Prabhakaran. In Ariyalur district, MLA Ka So Ka Kannan re-contests from Jayankondam, and Latha Babu will contest from Ariyalur, replacing sitting MLA K. Chinnappa.
Strategic Implications and Electoral Outlook
This candidate list reflects the DMK's careful calibration of political dynamics in central Tamil Nadu. By retaining experienced ministers and MLAs in key seats, the party aims to leverage their incumbency advantage and administrative record. Simultaneously, the introduction of new candidates in other constituencies signals an effort to refresh the party's image and appeal to younger voters and those seeking change.
The inclusion of former AIADMK minister R Vaithilingam highlights the DMK's strategy to attract cross-party support and weaken opposition strongholds. Overall, this announcement sets the stage for a competitive electoral battle in central Tamil Nadu, with the DMK positioning itself as a blend of stability and renewal.
