BJP MLA Urges Delhi Government to Tackle Stray Dog Menace in High-Risk Areas
In a significant move during the Delhi Assembly session on Friday, BJP MLA Harish Khurana raised urgent concerns about the escalating issue of stray dog attacks in the national capital. He called upon the Delhi government to take immediate and concrete steps to address this growing public safety threat.
Identifying High-Risk Zones for Dog Attacks
Khurana emphasized the need for the government to identify specific high-risk areas where dog attacks are more likely to occur. He proposed the deployment of specialized dog-management teams in these zones to ensure prompt response and control. The MLA highlighted that such proactive measures are crucial to prevent incidents before they escalate.
Focus on Schools, Parks, and Residential Colonies
Particularly concerning to Khurana are the risks posed to vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and women. He urged the government to implement special safety plans around schools, parks, and residential colonies. Aggressive dogs in these sensitive areas should be identified and managed effectively, he stated, to safeguard the community.
Rising Cases of Dog Bites and Demand for SOP
The BJP MLA pointed out that cases of dog bites are on the rise in Delhi, posing a serious threat to public health and safety. He demanded the establishment of a time-bound Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to ensure prompt action on citizens' complaints. This, he argued, would streamline the response mechanism and enhance accountability.
Sterilization and Population Control Measures
Khurana also stressed the importance of controlling the stray dog population through the implementation of the Animal Birth Control (ABC) program. Concrete steps for sterilization are essential to manage the numbers and reduce aggression among stray dogs, he added, urging the government to prioritize this initiative.
Assembly Proceedings and Other Issues
During the session, some BJP MLAs expressed dissatisfaction, noting that issues raised through special mentions were either unanswered or only partially addressed by departmental officers. In response, Speaker Vijender Gupta directed officers to address these concerns promptly, ensuring that legislative matters are handled efficiently.
Resolution Against Former Chief Minister
In a separate development, the Assembly passed a resolution issuing a warning to former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and others. This action followed their proven contempt of the house and for propagating what was described as a manufactured and baseless narrative regarding Phansi Ghar. Speaker Gupta noted that while the house has the authority to impose stringent punishments, it exercised judicial restraint by opting for a warning.
