Amritsar's Ambedkar Park Faces Severe Neglect, Residents Voice Frustration
In Amritsar, the once-vibrant Dr Ambedkar Park near Gilwali has fallen into a state of disrepair, with residents raising alarms over the authorities' apparent indifference to its plight. The public space, dedicated to the architect of the Indian Constitution, Dr BR Ambedkar, is now marred by garbage, broken benches, and cracked pathways, transforming it from a popular recreational spot into an eyesore for the local community.
Deteriorating Infrastructure and Sanitation Woes
Visitors and locals report that the park, which previously attracted morning walkers, children, and families from surrounding areas, has been completely neglected. The entire area was dug up for the construction of two tubewells, but authorities failed to follow through with redevelopment, leaving behind rugged lawns and damaged walkways. Heaps of garbage around the park exacerbate the issue, with a lack of regular cleaning making it less inviting for daily leisure and exercise activities.
Jagdish Kumar, a local resident, stated, "The poor maintenance has driven away many who used to visit regularly. It's heartbreaking to see a space meant for community bonding in such a state."
Safety Concerns Due to Poor Lighting
Another major concern highlighted by residents is the inadequate lighting in the park. Although poles for lights were installed, the lights themselves were never put up, plunging the entire area into darkness at night. This lack of illumination has made the park unsafe, discouraging families and elderly individuals from visiting after sunset.
Anil Kumar, another resident, explained, "At night, the park becomes a hazard. The darkness not only deters visitors but also poses security risks, which is unacceptable for a public space."
Failed Promises and Community Efforts
Residents have made repeated requests to the area's Municipal Councillor and AAP MLA Inderbir Singh Nijjar, who assured them of refurbishing the park. However, these promises have not translated into action, leaving the ground realities unchanged. In a small act of resilience, children and a few residents have taken it upon themselves to clear a section of the park for play, but this is seen as a temporary fix to a larger problem.
Demands for Immediate Renovation
The community has urgently called upon the Municipal Corporation to initiate comprehensive renovation and maintenance work. Their demands include:
- Repair of damaged walkways and benches
- Proper trimming of overgrown vegetation
- Development of green sections to enhance aesthetics
- Improved sanitation measures to address garbage accumulation
- Restoration of the lighting system for safety
Locals argue that restoring the park would not only provide a clean and safe recreational space but also honor the legacy of Dr Ambedkar, reflecting the respect and dignity he deserves.
Official Response and Future Plans
Councillor Ritu Gill mentioned that he has met with the MLA, and they plan to redevelop the park before Dr Ambedkar's birth anniversary. However, residents remain skeptical, given the past delays and unfulfilled assurances. The ongoing neglect of Ambedkar Park in Amritsar underscores broader issues of municipal accountability and the need for timely action in maintaining public infrastructure.
