DGCA Issues Aerodrome Licence to Noida International Airport in Jewar
In a significant development for India's aviation sector, Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu on Monday formally handed over the aerodrome licence issued by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to the upcoming Noida International Airport in Jewar. This approval represents a crucial milestone as the airport moves closer to becoming operational, with the minister emphasizing its role in enhancing the country's aviation infrastructure.
Minister Highlights Project's Importance and Vision
In a post on social media platform X, Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu expressed his satisfaction with the progress, stating, "Pleased to hand over the DGCA aerodrome license to Noida International Airport (Jewar) as it inches closer to becoming operational. Also discussed expediting of the remaining process by the airport operator." He further elaborated on the airport's significance, noting that it stands as one of the most important aviation developments in India, boasting the largest airport area in Asia.
Naidu detailed the airport's planned features, including its design as a major aviation hub with integrated maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) services along with air cargo facilities. "Envisioned as a major aviation hub with integrated MRO and air cargo facilities, it will play a crucial role in strengthening India's aviation ecosystem," he said. The minister also credited the rapid expansion of the aviation sector to the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, highlighting unprecedented growth in world-class infrastructure and connectivity opportunities.
Project Details and Expected Impact
The Noida International Airport project is situated in Jewar, within Uttar Pradesh's Gautam Buddha Nagar district. It is being developed through a public-private partnership between the Government of Uttar Pradesh and Zurich Airport International AG. Once operational, the airport is poised to become a vital transport hub for the National Capital Region (NCR) and western parts of Uttar Pradesh, serving as the second international airport in the NCR after Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport and helping to alleviate passenger traffic there.
Key features of the airport include:
- Initial phase with one runway and a terminal capable of handling approximately 12 million passengers annually.
- Future expansions planned in stages to manage up to 70 million passengers per year.
- Expected to support growth in logistics and real estate sectors in the region.
- Projected to create nearly one lakh direct and indirect jobs, bolstering India's aviation and cargo infrastructure.
