Rahul Gandhi to Lead Punjab Rally Against MGNREGA Scrapping and US Trade Deal
Rahul Gandhi's Barnala Rally Targets MGNREGA, US Trade Deal

Rahul Gandhi to Address Public Rally in Barnala on February 28

The leader of opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, is set to attend a significant public rally in Barnala on February 28. This event will be organized by the Punjab Congress, as announced by the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president, Amrinder Singh Raja Warring. The rally is positioned as a protest against two key issues: the scrapping of the MGNREGA (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act) and the signing of a trade deal with the United States.

Concerns Over Economic Impact on Punjab

In an informal interaction with reporters, Warring expressed deep concerns about the potential consequences of these policies. He stated that the new law on MGNREGA would severely impact the livelihood of the poor, while the trade deal with the US could have a devastating effect on Punjab's farmers. Warring emphasized that Punjab would be among the worst-hit states due to its reliance on agriculture as the mainstay of its economy.

He elaborated on the trade deal's risks, warning that it might have a long-term impact and pose multiple challenges. As the Ludhiana MP, Warring highlighted that if agricultural goods are allowed to be imported at a 0% tariff under the deal, it could destroy local agriculture. This scenario, he argued, would lead to no work, no jobs, and no earnings for a majority of farmers in the state, potentially leaving them jobless.

Broader Security and Social Implications

Warring also raised alarms about the broader implications, noting that such economic hardships could be exploited by enemies trying to foment trouble in Punjab. He pointed out that the state's youth are already vulnerable to drugs smuggled from Pakistan, and additional risks could exacerbate social issues. "We are really concerned about such a situation if that happens," he said, underscoring the need for vigilance.

Response to Political Criticism

Meanwhile, the Congress leader addressed charges from expelled party leader Navjot Kaur Sidhu, dismissing them by stating, "Given the state of her mind and health, I don't think I need to react or respond to what she has been saying." Warring noted that he faces baseless allegations and criticism not only from Sidhu but also from other political figures, including Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal, Bikram Majithia, and state BJP president Sunil Jakhar.

This rally is expected to draw significant attention as it highlights critical economic and political issues affecting Punjab, with Rahul Gandhi's participation amplifying its significance in the lead-up to potential policy debates.
