Vizag Police Enhance Traffic Enforcement with Advanced Laser Guns

The Visakhapatnam (Vizag) traffic police have significantly bolstered their enforcement capabilities with the acquisition of two advanced speed laser guns. These high-tech devices, valued at Rs 18 lakh, were procured through corporate social responsibility (CSR) support from the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC). This strategic move aims to rigorously monitor and curb over-speeding, particularly on critical road stretches such as highways and the scenic beach road.

Strategic Deployment and Technological Integration

Police officials plan to deploy these laser guns on selected road segments where speeding has been a persistent issue. The initiative was facilitated by GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg, following a formal proposal from Vizag Police Commissioner Dr. Shanka Bratha Bagchi. Currently, the police force operates with only one speed gun, making this addition a substantial upgrade in their traffic management arsenal.

Dr. Bagchi emphasized that the police are committed to strengthening enforcement and regulating traffic flow in Vizag. The advanced speed laser guns are capable of detecting violations from a distance of up to 100 metres, allowing for more effective monitoring without direct intervention. Furthermore, an additional speed laser gun has been sanctioned under CSR by South Asian LPG and is expected to arrive shortly.

AI-Powered Traffic Management System

All three advanced pieces of equipment will be integrated with the National Informatics Centre (NIC) system. This integration will enable real-time, contactless issuance of challans using Artificial Intelligence (AI), marking a significant shift towards technology-driven traffic management. The AI system will automate the process, reducing human error and increasing efficiency in penalizing traffic violations.

Addressing Rising Traffic and Accident Concerns

GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg highlighted the growing vehicular traffic in Vizag over the past few years, which has unfortunately led to an increase in fatal accidents due to rash and speeding driving. With the deployment of these two laser guns, the police will conduct rigorous enforcement drives aimed at mitigating road accidents and enhancing overall road safety.

The initiative represents a proactive step by the Vizag police and municipal authorities to leverage technology for public safety. By combining advanced equipment with AI capabilities, they aim to create a safer driving environment and reduce the incidence of speed-related accidents on the city's roads.
