Nashik SIT to Appoint Forensic Auditor in High-Profile Astrologer Fraud Case
The Special Investigating Team (SIT) in Nashik, formed to handle multiple cases against rape-accused astrologer Ashok Kharat, has taken a significant step forward by deciding to seek the appointment of a forensic auditor. This move aims to meticulously investigate the complex trails of cash gains allegedly amassed by Kharat through his astrological practices.
Unraveling the Cash Web: From Gemstones to Rituals
According to a senior SIT officer, Kharat's financial activities involved selling gemstones, polished tamarind seeds, and gold, while charging substantial sums in cash for performing pujas and other rituals both in India and abroad. "He may have invested this money through various means and we need to investigate that," the officer stated, highlighting the challenge of tracing cash transactions compared to bank transfers or cheques reported by some complainants.
The SIT plans to formally write to the state home department to secure a forensic auditor, who will specialize in following the money trail in cases where digital or paper records are scarce. This decision underscores the scale of the investigation, with initial estimates of Kharat's properties and assets placed at around Rs 41 crore, though officers suspect the total could exceed Rs 100 crore.
Background of the Case: Arrest and Multiple Allegations
Ashok Kharat, a Nashik-based astrologer, was arrested on March 18 in connection with a rape case. Subsequently, several other cases were registered against him, with police alleging that he sexually exploited numerous women and cheated many people by posing as an astrologer. "He has been accused of exploiting their faith and, in some cases, issuing threats," authorities added.
Nashik Commissioner of Police Sandip Karnik explained that Kharat deceived victims by promising remedies for issues related to health, finances, and personal or family problems. The SIT officer noted that Kharat's financial affairs were managed by two chartered accountants, who have been cooperating with the investigation.
Properties and Assets: A Lavish Empire
Investigations have revealed that Kharat purchased land at Mirgaon near Sinnar in Nashik starting in 2009. This property includes:
- A wedding hall
- A farmhouse
- Other facilities such as a mango orchard
He employed staff at these locations, indicating a structured operation. Additionally, Kharat built the Shree Ishaneshwar Temple at Mirgaon village under the banner of Sri Shivnika Sansthan, further embedding himself in the community.
Victim Testimonies: Exorbitant Charges for Dubious Items
Another SIT officer shared specific allegations from victims, illustrating the extent of the fraud. One caller claimed that Kharat sold him a gemstone worth Rs 50 for Rs 2 lakh, asserting it had healing powers. Another reported paying over Rs 1 lakh in cash for a tamarind seed presented as a blessing, only to verify the gemstone's quality after news of Kharat's arrest broke.
These testimonies highlight the predatory nature of the schemes, where trust was exploited for financial gain. The forensic auditor's role will be crucial in piecing together these cash transactions and uncovering any hidden assets or investments.
As the SIT continues its probe, the focus remains on ensuring justice for the victims and holding Kharat accountable for his alleged crimes, with the forensic audit serving as a key tool in this high-stakes investigation.
