Odisha DGP Takes Strict Action Over IPS Officers' Absenteeism at Police Events

In a move to reinforce discipline and collective representation, the Director General of Police (DGP) of Odisha, Y B Khurania, has expressed dissatisfaction with the frequent absence of several Indian Police Service (IPS) officers at official functions organized by the state police in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack.

Official Directive Issued to 36 IPS Officers

On Monday, the state police headquarters sent a formal letter to 36 IPS officers posted in the twin cities, explicitly directing them to attend all events organized by the Odisha police. The letter, signed by Additional Director General (Headquarters) Prateek Mohanty, stated, "It has been observed by DGP that many senior officers are not attending official functions organised by different verticals of Odisha police. It is, therefore, requested to make it convenient to attend the said official functions without fail." The Times of India has reviewed this communication.

Exclusions and Exemption Procedures

The directive specifically excludes IPS officers serving in the Odisha vigilance, fire and emergency services, and prisons directorate, as these departments are not under the administrative control of the state police. Furthermore, the order clarified that if officers have unavoidable official commitments, they must seek specific exemption directly from the DGP, ensuring accountability and proper oversight.

Trigger for the Directive

Police sources revealed that the directive was prompted by DGP Khurania taking serious note of absenteeism during a felicitation ceremony held at Police Bhawan in Bhubaneswar on Monday. This event was organized to honor sports personnel serving in the Odisha police who had excelled in national and state-level competitions, bringing laurels to the force. The DGP's emphasis on attendance aims to enhance the success and prestige of such gatherings.

Focus on Discipline and Collective Representation

A senior police officer commented, "The DGP wants to lay emphasis on discipline and collective representation at official gatherings. Officers should not treat it as a diktat as their active participation will make events grand success." This approach underscores the importance of unity and professional conduct within the police force, fostering a culture of engagement and respect for official protocols.

The move highlights ongoing efforts to streamline administrative practices and ensure that senior officers lead by example in supporting departmental initiatives and ceremonies.
