Nagpur: Two More Arrested in Alleged Attack on SDO During Illegal Sand Crackdown
In a significant development, the Local Crime Branch (LCB) in Nagpur has made two additional arrests in connection with an alleged attempt to attack Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) Vidyasagar Chavan, aged 51, during an operation targeting illegal sand transport. The altercation occurred when SDO Vidyasagar Chavan was en route to the tehsil office in Bhiwapur. During his journey, he spotted a 12-wheeler tipper truck carrying approximately 10 tonnes of sand, which was suspected to be illegally transported. As Chavan approached the vehicle to inspect the necessary documents, the driver allegedly accelerated and fled the scene in an attempt to evade scrutiny.
Simultaneously, an unmarked white car joined the pursuit and reportedly attempted to block and push the SDO's government vehicle off the road, escalating the situation into a dangerous confrontation. The tipper driver also allegedly made efforts to ram the official vehicle, posing a serious threat to the safety of the officer and others involved.
Arrests and Legal Actions
Following the incident, swift action was taken by law enforcement. The tipper driver, identified as Rajat Rohankar, aged 29 and a resident of Kharbi, was detained at Shivara. Subsequently, on February 13, the LCB arrested two more individuals: Tushar Dhavade, the owner of the tipper, and Suraj Hatekar, aged 24, who was driving the white car. Both were apprehended from under the Tarodi bridge, marking a crucial step in the investigation.
A formal case has been registered at the Umred Police Station. The charges include various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) along with relevant provisions of the Maharashtra Revenue Code, the Mines and Minerals Act, and the Environment Protection Act.
