Nagpur Bus Driver Suspended Following Sexual Harassment Allegations by Conductor
In a concerning incident from Nagpur, a 25-year-old driver employed by Star Bus for the Aapli Bus service of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has been suspended after a formal sexual harassment complaint was lodged against him. The complainant is a 23-year-old woman conductor, who reported the matter to the Gittikhadan police station, leading to swift action by authorities.
Details of the Alleged Incident
The alleged harassment is reported to have occurred on March 30, while both the driver, identified as Akshay Gajbhiye, and the conductor were on duty aboard a bus operating between Wathoda and Friends Colony. According to sources familiar with the case, Gajbhiye and the conductor were previously friends but had experienced a falling out, resulting in their assignment to different routes. However, after some time, they were again scheduled to work together on the same bus.
As per the official complaint, during this shift, the driver allegedly grabbed the conductor's hand and expressed his desire to marry her, stating, "I want to marry you, I want you." When she refused his advances, he is said to have continued holding her hand, causing significant embarrassment in front of passengers. The incident reportedly took place after the bus had reached its final stop at Friends Colony, adding to the distress of the situation.
Response and Investigation
The conductor promptly reported the matter to her senior officials and later approached the Gittikhadan police station to file a formal complaint. This led to the registration of a case against Gajbhiye for making inappropriate advances and causing public embarrassment to a woman, highlighting the seriousness of the allegations.
In response to the complaint, the management of Star Bus took immediate action by suspending Akshay Gajbhiye pending a thorough departmental inquiry. This suspension underscores the company's commitment to addressing workplace misconduct and ensuring the safety of its employees.
Simultaneously, the Gittikhadan police have initiated a detailed probe into the matter to gather evidence and statements from all parties involved. The investigation aims to ascertain the facts and determine appropriate legal actions based on the findings.
Broader Implications
This incident sheds light on the ongoing challenges of workplace harassment in public transport sectors and emphasizes the importance of robust grievance redressal mechanisms. It serves as a reminder for organizations to enforce strict policies against sexual harassment and provide safe working environments for all staff members.
The case continues to develop as authorities work to ensure justice and uphold the dignity of the complainant, with further updates expected as the inquiry progresses.
