NHAI Grants Crucial Approval for Enchakkal Flyover Approach Roads in Thiruvananthapuram

After months of uncertainty and project delays, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has officially granted approval for the construction of approach roads to the flyover under development at Enchakkal in Thiruvananthapuram. This decision clears a major hurdle that had stalled progress on this significant infrastructure initiative.

The approval was issued by the NHAI regional office, authorizing the contractor to resume and accelerate pending construction activities ahead of the impending southwest monsoon season. With barely 45 days remaining before monsoon rains are expected to hit Kerala, this timely approval is crucial for maintaining the project timeline.

Revised Design Emphasizes Structural Safety

The newly approved design represents a substantial departure from the original plan. Instead of incorporating retaining walls on either side of the approach road, the revised proposal includes the construction of four additional pillars on both the northern and southern sides to ensure enhanced structural stability.

This design modification comes in response to recent retaining wall collapses reported from Kottiyam and Kooriyadu locations within the state. These incidents raised significant safety concerns and prompted a comprehensive re-evaluation of the Enchakkal flyover design approach.

"The revised design prioritizes long-term safety and durability," explained an NHAI official. "Considering recent incidents elsewhere in the state, we decided to opt for a more structurally secure approach using additional pillars instead of retaining walls."

The official further emphasized that with approval now secured, the contractor has received explicit instructions to expedite work to ensure critical components are completed before monsoon conditions arrive.

Construction Acceleration and Project Details

The contractor, Cherian Varkey Constructions Ltd, has already begun mobilizing resources to fast-track the remaining work. Officials have indicated that priority will be given to completing the approach road structures and drainage components to prevent weather-related disruptions during the monsoon period.

The Enchakkal flyover represents a key infrastructure project with an estimated cost of approximately Rs 47 crore. Its primary objective is to alleviate traffic congestion along the busy airport corridor in Thiruvananthapuram, which has long suffered from significant bottlenecks.

Despite recent delays specifically related to revising the approach road design on northern and southern stretches, substantial progress has been made on the core structure. Construction of all five spans of the flyover has been successfully completed.

Attention has now shifted to finishing the approach roads, lighting systems, and ancillary works. In alignment with modern urban infrastructure standards, the flyover will feature street lighting similar to those installed on the nearby Chackai flyover, enhancing both visibility and aesthetic appeal along the corridor.

Project Timeline and Expected Benefits

NHAI officials have expressed confidence that the revised design will prevent future structural issues and facilitate timely project completion. "We are targeting completion by September, provided weather conditions remain favorable and there are no further unforeseen challenges," the official added.

Once operational, the Enchakkal flyover is expected to significantly streamline vehicular movement toward the airport and adjoining areas. This improvement will reduce bottlenecks and enhance overall traffic flow in one of the city's busiest transit corridors.

The Enchakkal Junction has historically represented a significant bottleneck due to substantial traffic congestion, creating strong demand for this flyover solution. This infrastructure initiative aims to facilitate smoother vehicular movement from Kovalam, Shanghumugham, and Vizhinjam toward the city center while simultaneously alleviating congestion at this pivotal junction.

Situated along the bustling Kazhakkoottam-Mukkola National Highway corridor, the junction serves as a converging point for roads stemming from East Fort, Vallakadavu, Attakulangara, and Pettah-Enchakkal. Traffic congestion has been particularly intense along the Chackai to Kovalam service road, frequently leaving vehicles stationary for 15 to 20 minutes, which subsequently hampered traffic flow on adjoining roads.

The project's temporary halt in recent months specifically to revise the approach road design had raised concerns among commuters and local residents. However, with the new approval and accelerated construction timeline, officials anticipate significant improvements to the city's traffic infrastructure in the coming months.
