Triumph Motorcycles India Accelerates Sales Target for 350cc Bikes

Triumph Motorcycles India has set an ambitious goal to sell 1 lakh units of its sub-400cc motorcycles within the next 15 months. This marks a significant acceleration from the 30 months it took to achieve the first 1 lakh sales milestone. The company, which is the largest UK-owned motorcycle manufacturer with a heritage dating back to 1902, is leveraging strategic partnerships and tax benefits to drive this rapid growth.

Strategic Alliance and Manufacturing Efficiency

In 2023, Triumph entered into a non-equity alliance focused on manufacturing motorcycles ranging from 200cc to 750cc in India. This collaboration combines British engineering expertise with Indian manufacturing efficiency, allowing for cost-effective production and competitive pricing. The alliance has been instrumental in expanding Triumph's presence in the Indian market.

New 350cc Bike Range and Competitive Pricing

Speaking to the media, Manik Nangia, President of Bajaj Auto Ltd-Probiking, which handles Triumph and KTM brands, highlighted the launch of six new 350cc bikes. These include models such as the Speed 350, Scrambler 350 X, and Thruxton 350. By recalibrating engines from 400cc to 350cc, the company can take advantage of the lower 18% GST slab applicable to bikes up to 350cc. This strategic move has enabled price reductions of Rs 10,000 to Rs 21,600 per bike without compromising performance.

The starting price for these bikes is now below Rs 2 lakh, making them more accessible to a broader range of consumers. This competitive pricing is expected to boost sales significantly, helping Triumph achieve its target of 1 lakh units in a shorter timeframe.

Expansion of Sales and Service Network

Since Triumph's relaunch in partnership with Bajaj Auto, the brand's footprint has expanded dramatically. Initially, there were only 13-14 showrooms across the country. Today, Triumph boasts 230 sales and service outlets covering nearly 200 cities. Nangia announced plans to increase this number to 400 touchpoints by the end of the current fiscal year, further enhancing customer accessibility and support.

Global and Domestic Manufacturing Strategy

While the 350cc bikes are manufactured in India for the domestic market, Triumph continues to produce 400cc bikes at its Chakan plant for global distribution. Additionally, higher-capacity motorcycles ranging from 660cc to 2,500cc are imported to India in Completely Built Unit (CBU) and Completely Knocked Down (CKD) forms. These premium models are marketed by Probiking, catering to enthusiasts seeking high-performance options.

The combination of localized manufacturing, tax benefits, and an expanding network positions Triumph Motorcycles India for robust growth in the competitive two-wheeler market. With its rich heritage and innovative strategies, the company is poised to capture a larger share of India's motorcycle segment while maintaining its global standards of quality and performance.
