The detained individuals include seven fishermen from Karaikal district, four from Mayiladuthurai, and one from Nagapattinam. The Sri Lankan navy also seized a mechanized boat registered under the name of K Veeravel, a resident of Kilinjalmedu village in Karaikal. This vessel, along with all fishing gear and the day's catch, was confiscated during the operation.

The fishermen had embarked on their journey from the Karaikal fishing harbour in the early hours of Friday. By Saturday night, they were fishing south of Kodiyakarai, also known as Point Calimere, alongside other boats. At approximately 9 PM, personnel from Sri Lanka's Northern Naval Command intercepted the boat. The fishermen were detained on the spot, and their vessel was taken into custody.
Legal Proceedings and Official Response
Following the arrest, the fishermen were transported to Kangesanthurai Harbour in Jaffna. They have been handed over to officials from the Sri Lankan Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources for further legal proceedings. In response to the incident, fishing community leaders have urgently appealed to the governments of Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, and the Union government to intervene. They are calling for immediate action to secure the release of the fishermen and the return of their boat.
