Government Rejects Claims of Mass Migrant Exodus Linked to LPG Crisis
The government has firmly dismissed circulating reports suggesting that migrant workers are returning to their home states in large numbers due to an alleged LPG crisis connected to the ongoing war in the Middle East. Officials cited comprehensive ground-level assessments and multiple indicators of stable supply to counter these claims.
No Evidence Found in Railway Station Monitoring
Sources informed ANI that a week-long monitoring exercise was conducted across major railway stations nationwide to verify the reports. "After a week of monitoring, we found no signs of migrants returning to their native places in large numbers," a senior official stated. The exercise tracked passenger footfall at key locations and reported no unusual surge that would indicate a large-scale exodus.
A fact-check report based on this assessment has been submitted to the Prime Minister’s Office, reinforcing the government's position that the situation is under control.
High-Level Review Meeting Directs States on LPG Supply
In a high-level review meeting chaired by the secretary of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG), states were directed to ensure uninterrupted LPG supply. Key directives included:
- Prioritizing domestic and essential needs
- Maintaining vigilance against hoarding, diversion, and misinformation
- Coordinating with oil marketing companies for targeted distribution of 5-kg Free Trade LPG (FTL) cylinders based on local requirements
On concerns related to FTL supplies for migrant workers, states reported no disruptions and confirmed that supplies remain stable.
Stable LPG Supply Indicators Cited by Ministry
According to the ministry, multiple indicators point to a stable and improving LPG supply situation. Key data points include:
- Since March 23, approximately 6.75 lakh 5-kg FTL cylinders have been sold nationwide.
- Public sector oil companies have organized about 550 awareness camps, selling over 6,700 cylinders.
- No dry-outs have been reported at LPG distributorships.
- Online bookings have reached nearly 97% across the industry.
- Delivery Authentication Code-based deliveries have risen to about 90%, aimed at curbing diversion.
Domestic LPG distribution has remained unaffected, with over 18 crore cylinders delivered to households since March 1, 2026.
Officials Urge Public to Avoid Rumors
Officials reiterated that the situation is fully under control and urged citizens not to rely on unverified rumors regarding LPG shortages. The clarification comes amid claims that supply disruptions from the Middle East conflict have triggered panic among migrant workers, prompting them to return to their villages. The government's response emphasizes proactive measures and transparent communication to maintain public confidence.
