Mizoram Police Crack Homicide Case Within a Day
In a swift operation, the Lunglei district police in Mizoram have arrested a 41-year-old man for the alleged murder of a 73-year-old woman. The victim, K Vanlalngaii, was found dead in her rented residence in Lunglei town on the evening of December 31.
The breakthrough came within 24 hours of the crime being reported, as confirmed by Lunglei district Superintendent of Police (SP) J Lalmuankima on Friday. The prime suspect, identified as Johny Rosangliana, a resident of the Bazar Veng neighbourhood in Lunglei town, was apprehended at around 9 pm on Thursday night.
Investigation and Confession
SP Lalmuankima revealed that during interrogation, Rosangliana confessed to the crime. The police had formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the homicide due to the limited evidence at the scene. "The hard work of the SIT resulted in a breakthrough within 24 hours," the SP stated.
Forensic experts found almost no crucial evidence, except for signs of a break-in. The primary motive is suspected to be robbery, as the perpetrator likely entered to steal money. It was reported that Vanlalngaii had received at least Rs 20,000 as a Christmas gift from donors.
The post-mortem examination indicated that the cause of death was either a blow from a blunt weapon or a fall during a struggle. Police officials noted injuries on the victim's neck and the left side of her head.
Victim's Background and Legal Proceedings
K Vanlalngaii, who was economically disadvantaged, had been living alone in an Anganwadi building rent-free. Following the post-mortem, her body was taken to her son's residence at Luangmual and buried on Thursday afternoon.
A case has been registered at the Lunglei police station under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The suspect was produced before a district court on Friday, which remanded him to judicial custody. He has been sent to Lunglei district jail as further investigation continues to establish a clear motive and gather additional evidence.
