In a significant crackdown, the Government Railway Police (GRP) at Kanpur Central Railway Station apprehended a young man allegedly involved in smuggling illicit liquor. The arrest, made during a special checking drive, led to the recovery of contraband alcohol valued at approximately ten thousand rupees.
Vigilant GRP Team Thwarts Smuggling Attempt
The operation was conducted on Friday, as part of heightened security measures in view of the ongoing Magh Mela. GRP in-charge inspector Omnarayan Singh of Kanpur Central Station stated that the checking campaign was actively underway. At around 1:40 pm, personnel noticed a youth acting suspiciously on platform number 1, near the garbage house on the parcel side.
The individual was carrying a distinctive red backpack, and his nervous demeanor raised immediate red flags. When approached and questioned by the officers, the youth failed to provide coherent answers, further deepening the suspicion surrounding him.
Seizure and Confession
Following the evasive responses, the GRP team decided to search his bag. The inspection yielded a substantial haul of illegal alcohol. A total of 48 quarters of English liquor were discovered concealed within the backpack.
The accused was immediately taken to the police station for detailed interrogation. During questioning, he identified himself as Aadil, a resident of Rajipura in Jalaun district. Police officials revealed that he was waiting for a train at the time of his arrest. His intended destination was the Bihar border, where he planned to supply the seized consignment.
Ongoing Investigation and Legal Action
The GRP has taken strict legal action following the arrest. The recovered liquor, worth around Rs 10,000, has been formally sealed as case property. A formal case has been registered against the accused under relevant sections of the law.
Authorities are not stopping at this single arrest. The GRP has indicated that they are intensively interrogating Aadil to uncover details about his network and other potential associates involved in the smuggling racket. This move aims to dismantle the supply chain and prevent similar incidents in the future, especially during major public gatherings like the Magh Mela.
