Temple Priest Murder: Three Sentenced to Life Imprisonment in Tirunelveli
The Third Additional District Court in Tirunelveli delivered a significant verdict on Tuesday, convicting and sentencing three individuals to life imprisonment for the brutal murder of a temple priest. The case stemmed from a violent community dispute over the administration and revenue sharing of the Sudalai Madasamy Temple in Seevalaperi village, which occurred in 2021.
Background of the Community Dispute
According to the prosecution, there was a longstanding arrangement between two communities regarding the temple's administration. The Thevar community was responsible for managing the shops located outside the temple premises, while the Konar community handled other temple activities. The deceased, Chidambaram alias Durai, a 41-year-old priest belonging to the Konar community, became a central figure in this setup.
The dispute escalated over issues related to leasing the temple shops and distributing the generated revenue. Tensions between the two groups reached a boiling point, leading to a tragic incident on April 18, 2021.
The Fatal Attack and Legal Proceedings
On that fateful day, an armed gang from the Thevar community launched a violent attack on Chidambaram and his friend, Nataraja Perumal. While Chidambaram succumbed to his injuries and died, Perumal sustained severe wounds but survived. Following the incident, the Seevalaperi police registered a case against 13 individuals, charging them with murder and other offences under the Indian Penal Code.
The legal process saw Judge A. Robinson George presiding over the case. After thorough examination of the evidence and testimonies, the court found three accused—Thangapandi, Petchikutti, and Murugan—guilty of the murder. Each of them was sentenced to life imprisonment and fined ₹5,000. The remaining ten accused were acquitted due to insufficient evidence linking them directly to the crime.
