Delhi Police Apprehends Suspect in Widespread Hoax Bomb Threat Case
In a significant breakthrough, the Delhi Police on Saturday arrested a 47-year-old unemployed man from Mysuru for allegedly orchestrating a series of hoax bomb threat emails that targeted hundreds of educational institutions, courts, and other establishments across Delhi, Karnataka, and various parts of the country in recent times.
Details of the Arrest and Investigation
Acting on a credible tip-off, law enforcement officials apprehended the suspect, identified as Srinivas, also known as Louis, from his rented residence in Mysuru's Brindavan extension area. He is currently being transported to the national capital for further interrogation and legal proceedings.
During preliminary questioning, Srinivas reportedly confessed to sending these threatening emails from multiple undisclosed locations. He admitted to tagging numerous schools and institutes in each communication, effectively targeting an estimated 900 to 1,000 entities in his campaign of fear.
Background of the Accused
According to police sources, Srinivas, originally hailing from Bengaluru, may have been grappling with mental distress. He is unmarried and resides with his mother in the Mysuru house. Despite holding a postgraduate degree, he is currently without employment. His mother, a retired government employee, sustains the household through her pension. Srinivas also has a brother who lives separately from the family.
Chain of Events Leading to the Arrest
The investigation was triggered after a hoax bomb threat was received at the Delhi High Court, prompting a judge to file a formal complaint and leading to the registration of a case. Additional First Information Reports (FIRs) were lodged following a spate of similar threat emails, galvanizing the Delhi Police into action.
Utilizing a blend of technical surveillance and manual intelligence gathering, authorities successfully traced the suspect. A specialized team from the New Delhi district cyber police station traveled to Mysuru and, in collaboration with personnel from the V V Puram police station, conducted a raid at Srinivas's residence. During the operation, law enforcement seized a laptop and multiple SIM cards believed to be used in the crimes.
Legal Proceedings and Ongoing Probe
After being taken into custody in the morning, Srinivas was presented before a judicial magistrate and remanded to police custody. He was formally handed over to the Delhi Police and is being brought to Delhi under transit remand as per the latest reports.
This arrest comes in the wake of recent incidents, including a bomb threat email received at the Delhi Assembly on March 25, marking the second consecutive day of such alerts. Additionally, last September, the high court was evacuated following a similar hoax email. Police are now investigating whether Srinivas was responsible for these earlier threats as well, aiming to uncover the full extent of his alleged activities.
The case highlights ongoing concerns about cybersecurity and public safety, with authorities urging institutions to remain vigilant and report any suspicious communications promptly.
