Kochi Police Cracks Down on Gang Activities with Operation Steel Bird Arrests
In a significant crackdown on organized crime, the Ernakulam rural police on Thursday arrested four individuals as part of its ongoing campaign, Operation Steel Bird. This initiative specifically targets those involved in gang-related activities and criminal networks across the region.
Details of the Arrested Individuals and Seized Evidence
The arrested persons have been identified as Vineeth, aged 37, from Parakkadavu; Bilal, aged 32, from Edathala; Sharath, aged 33, also from Edathala; and Ajas, aged 33, from Thrikkakara. Police sources revealed that Vineeth and Bilal were known rivals, with Vineeth being an accused in multiple criminal cases. During the operation, authorities seized a specially designed knife from Vineeth, described as deadly and aimed at causing serious internal injuries, along with a car taken into custody.
From Ajas, police confiscated approximately 10 high-intensity crackers discovered at a poultry farm he operates in Pottachira. Bilal and Sharath, both listed on the gangster registry, are implicated in several criminal cases, with weapons also recovered from them during the arrests.
Background of the Conflict and Preventive Measures
An officer involved in the case stated, "Bilal allegedly unleashed violence by forcing his way into Vineeth's house. Vineeth was nursing a grudge against Bilal for the same." The arrests serve not only as a punitive action but also as a preventive measure, as police had received intelligence suggesting a potential clash between the accused parties. This proactive approach aims to curb further violence and maintain public safety in the area.
Separate Case: Two Youths Arrested for Temple Thefts in Panangad
In an unrelated incident, the Panangad police apprehended two youths on Thursday for their alleged involvement in a series of temple thefts. The arrested individuals are Darwin, aged 23, and Shyamaprasad, aged 18, both residents of Panangad.
Modus Operandi and Investigation Challenges
According to police reports, the duo typically operated by riding a bike at night, breaking into temples, and stealing items such as donation boxes, lamps, and valuable utensils. Apprehending them proved challenging because the bike they used was stolen and fitted with a fake number plate. However, after meticulously examining numerous CCTV camera footages, authorities successfully tracked and captured them.
Recovery of Stolen Goods and Criminal History
Police investigations revealed that the stolen items were sold at a scrap shop in Chottanikkara. All recovered goods have been secured as evidence. Darwin, the first accused, has multiple cases against him, including charges under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and for housebreaking, indicating a pattern of criminal behavior.
These arrests underscore the Ernakulam rural police's commitment to tackling both organized gang activities and petty crimes, ensuring law and order in the region through targeted operations and diligent investigative work.
