Kochi Police Crack Down on MDMA Trafficking, Arrest Two Youths
In a significant operation, the Kochi city police arrested two young individuals on Thursday, seizing 23.49 grams of MDMA from Kalamassery. The arrested persons have been identified as Muhammad Ajmal, aged 24, from Koyilandy in Kozhikode, and Fazil, aged 21, from Thiruvanthra in Thrissur.
Cash and Drugs Seized in Coordinated Raid
Alongside the narcotics, police confiscated Rs 82,100 in cash, which is suspected to be proceeds from drug trafficking activities. This seizure underscores the financial motives behind the illicit trade and the efforts of law enforcement to disrupt both the supply and economic gains of such operations.
Operation Led by Specialized Police Teams
The raid was executed by the Kochi city Dansaf team, operating under the direct supervision of Narcotic Cell Assistant Commissioner T D Sunilkumar. The action was initiated based on confidential intelligence provided to City Commissioner Kaliraj Mahesh Kumar, highlighting the role of precise information in combating drug-related crimes.
Surge in MDMA Cases in Kochi District
This arrest is part of a broader trend of increasing MDMA incidents in the region. In the first three months of 2026 alone, nearly 40 youths have been apprehended in connection with MDMA possession and distribution in the district. During this period, authorities have seized over 1.5 kilograms of the substance, indicating a substantial presence of the drug in the area.
Demographic Insights into Arrests:
- Most of those arrested are individuals in their 20s, reflecting a concerning involvement of young adults in drug activities.
- At least four women have also been taken into custody in related cases, pointing to a diverse demographic engaged in these illicit practices.
The ongoing crackdown by Kochi police aims to curb the spread of MDMA and other narcotics, with a focus on both enforcement and prevention strategies to protect the community from the dangers of drug abuse.
