Five Individuals Arrested in Karnataka for Assaulting Police Officers and Operating Illegal Betting Operation
In a series of interconnected incidents in the Udupi district of Karnataka, law enforcement authorities have apprehended five persons on charges of attempting to assault police officers with a vehicle, obstructing official duties, and engaging in illicit cricket betting activities. The arrests occurred in the towns of Karkala and Shirva, highlighting a coordinated effort by the accused to evade capture and continue their unlawful operations.
First Incident: Attempted Vehicular Assault in Karkala
According to police reports, the initial confrontation took place on Friday afternoon around 2:30 PM in Kasaba village, Karkala. Police Sub-Inspector Prasanna MS of the Karkala Rural police station, accompanied by his team, attempted to halt an SUV traveling from Banglegudde Circle. When signaled to stop, the occupants of the vehicle—identified as Sudarshan, Kartavya Shetty, Arun Srikant, and Shashikant—allegedly accelerated towards the complainant and police personnel with the intent to cause fatal harm, thereby obstructing them from performing their official responsibilities.
A formal case has been registered at the Karkala Town police station under Sections 109, 132, and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), reflecting the severity of the charges related to attempted murder and obstruction of justice.
Second Incident: Related Confrontation and Betting Scheme Uncovered in Shirva
In a related development later that same day, around 3:10 PM in Shirva, Police Sub-Inspector Manjunath Marabada of the Shirva police station observed the same suspicious SUV approaching from Belman towards Shirva near Padu village. Upon signaling the vehicle to stop, the driver initially sped towards the officer, then abruptly slowed down and pushed PSI Marabada aside through the car window before attempting to escape. The vehicle was subsequently intercepted by police personnel in Shirva town.
During the ensuing inquiry, the occupants identified themselves as Sudarshan, Kartavya Shetty, and Arun. Further investigation revealed that, along with associates Srikant, Shashikant, Tejas from Hebri, and Prajwal from Byndoor, they were involved in organizing a cricket betting ring. This operation allegedly defrauded individuals by collecting money under the false pretense of investment, exploiting the popularity of cricket for illicit financial gain.
A case has been registered at the Shirva police station under Sections 132, 318(2), 112(1), and 3(5) of the BNS, along with Section 78(3) of the Karnataka Police Act, encompassing charges related to assault, cheating, and illegal betting activities.
Arrests and Legal Proceedings
In connection with both cases, police have arrested the following individuals:
- Sudarshan Shetty, aged 29, from Kundapur
- Kartavya Shetty, aged 27, from Kundapur
- Arun Shetty, aged 29, from Byndoor
- Tejas, aged 28, from Hebri
- Prajwal Shetty, aged 29, from Byndoor
All accused persons have been taken into custody and are scheduled to be presented before the court for further legal proceedings. The arrests underscore the police's commitment to combating organized crime and ensuring public safety in the region.
This incident serves as a reminder of the risks faced by law enforcement officers and the ongoing efforts to dismantle illegal betting networks that prey on unsuspecting citizens. Authorities continue to investigate the full extent of the betting scheme and any potential connections to broader criminal activities.
