A 52-year-old woman was tragically killed after being run over by a truck on National Highway 22 in Chatra district on Friday, according to police. The victim has been identified as Anju Devi, a resident of Jori Khurd. She was returning home after her morning walk when the incident occurred.
Residents protest after accident
Following the accident, furious residents blocked the road, demanding adequate compensation for the family and stricter enforcement of traffic regulations. The protesters also vandalised several vehicles in the area. Witnesses reported that the truck driver attempted to flee the scene, but local residents managed to catch him. They allegedly assaulted the driver and damaged his truck before police intervened.
Officer in-charge of Vashishth Nagar police station, Amit Kumar Singh, rescued the driver from the mob and ensured his safety. Later, Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) Jahur Alam took administrative action by banning the movement of heavy vehicles in the Jori market area from 5 am to 8 pm. Additionally, a speed limit of 20 kmph was imposed in the vicinity to prevent such incidents in the future.
Administrative measures
The SDO's directives aim to enhance road safety and address the concerns raised by the local community. The police have registered a case and are investigating the matter further. Meanwhile, residents continue to demand justice for Anju Devi and long-term solutions to curb reckless driving on NH-22.
