The Indian Navy has taken delivery of Mahendragiri, the sixth ship of the Nilgiri-class stealth frigates, marking a significant milestone in the nation's naval modernization efforts. The vessel was handed over to the Navy in a ceremony held at the Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MSDL) in Mumbai.
Project 17A: A Key Naval Modernization Program
The Nilgiri-class ships, also known as Project 17A, represent a major step forward in India's indigenous warship building capabilities. These advanced stealth frigates are being constructed at two premier shipyards: Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MSDL) in Mumbai and Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd (GRSE) in Kolkata. The project aims to enhance the Navy's surface combat capabilities with state-of-the-art technology and stealth features.
Mahendragiri: The Sixth Stealth Frigate
Mahendragiri is the latest addition to the Nilgiri-class, following the earlier deliveries of Nilgiri, Himgiri, Udaygiri, Taragiri, and Vindhyagiri. The ship is named after a mountain range in the Eastern Ghats of India, continuing the tradition of naming these frigates after hill ranges. The vessel is equipped with advanced sensors, weapons systems, and stealth technology to minimize radar cross-section.
Indigenous Design and Construction
Project 17A ships are designed by the Indian Navy's in-house design organization, the Directorate of Naval Design, with significant contributions from private and public sector partners. The construction involves extensive use of modular building techniques, which has improved efficiency and reduced build time. Over 75% of the equipment and systems are sourced from Indian manufacturers, supporting the government's 'Make in India' initiative.
The delivery of Mahendragiri is a testament to the growing self-reliance of India's shipbuilding industry. The ship will now undergo sea trials and weapon system integration before being commissioned into the Indian Navy. The remaining ships of the class are at various stages of construction and are expected to be delivered over the next few years.
The Indian Navy's fleet of Nilgiri-class frigates will significantly bolster its blue-water capabilities, providing enhanced maritime security and power projection in the Indian Ocean Region and beyond.
