Uttar Pradesh's Mining Sector Delivers Robust Revenue of Rs 2,543 Crore

In a significant boost to the state's finances, the mining sector in Uttar Pradesh has generated substantial revenue, with ten key districts contributing close to Rs 2,543 crore to the state coffers. This impressive figure, covering mining activities up to February in the current financial year, was highlighted during a recent high-level review meeting chaired by the Chief Secretary. While mining operations are conducted across all 75 districts of UP, these ten districts, endowed with premium natural resources, have emerged as the top revenue earners.

Sonbhadra Leads Revenue Generation with Rs 678 Crore

Sonbhadra district has recorded the highest revenue from mining, generating an impressive Rs 678 crore for the state. This revenue was accrued through the excavation of both major and minor minerals, showcasing the district's rich mineral wealth. Following Sonbhadra, Mahoba district contributed Rs 395 crore, derived from duties, charges, and royalties levied on mining businesses. The revenue ranking continues with Hamirpur, Jhansi, and Jalaun districts, in that order, demonstrating a widespread economic impact across the state.

Strict Monitoring and Transparency Enhance Revenue Collection

Officials have attributed this enhanced revenue collection to stringent measures implemented under the directives of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The mining department has ensured continuous monitoring of all mining activities, coupled with increased transparency in the allocation and operation of mining leases. This proactive approach has not only improved revenue streams but also strengthened control over illegal mining operations.

Field officials have been specifically instructed to adhere strictly to environmental norms and maintain vigilant oversight of mining contractors to prevent any violations. The department's efforts focus on balancing revenue generation with sustainable practices, ensuring that mining activities do not compromise environmental integrity.

Comprehensive Strategy for Sustainable Mining

The state government's strategy encompasses a multi-faceted approach:

  • Revenue Optimization: Leveraging premium natural resources in key districts to maximize state income.
  • Illegal Mining Curb: Implementing strict controls and surveillance to deter unauthorized mining activities.
  • Environmental Compliance: Enforcing adherence to environmental standards by all stakeholders, including contractors and officials.
  • Transparent Operations: Ensuring clear and fair processes in lease allocations and mining operations to foster accountability.

This comprehensive framework has positioned Uttar Pradesh's mining sector as a significant contributor to the state's economy, with the top ten districts playing a pivotal role. The ongoing focus on monitoring and transparency is expected to sustain and potentially increase revenue in the coming fiscal years, supporting broader state development initiatives.
