Truck Overturn on Mumbai-Pune Expressway Triggers Major Traffic Disruption

A significant traffic snarl unfolded on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway early Friday morning after a truck overturned near the Amrutanjan Bridge, leading to extensive delays and stranding hundreds of commuters. The incident occurred in the Borghat section, a critical and often congested part of the highway.

Details of the Accident and Immediate Response

The accident involved a truck transporting fish from Mumbai to Pune, which lost control on an uphill turn. Preliminary investigations indicate that the vehicle's brakes failed, causing it to overturn and block the roadway. Authorities, including IRB patrolling teams and the Highway Traffic Police (HSP) from the Pune division, responded swiftly to the scene.

SP Vikrant Deshmukh of the Highway Safety Patrol, Pune division, provided details on the operation. "The truck overturned, blocking the path. Our teams reached the spot promptly and used a crane to clear the wreckage. Traffic was briefly halted for about 20 to 30 minutes during the clearance operation," he stated. Fortunately, both the driver and the cleaner escaped without any injuries.

Commuters Report Extended Delays and Frustration

Despite official reports of a brief traffic halt, commuters experienced much longer delays, with many taking to social media to express their frustration. Reports indicated that the impact lasted well over 90 minutes, causing significant inconvenience.

A commuter named Andy posted on X (formerly Twitter) around 8:30 AM, highlighting the severity of the situation. "Heavy traffic congestion on Pune-Mumbai Expressway. We have been stuck for the last hour and a half," he wrote. Another traveler, Ashok Kumar Joshi, described the conditions as "pathetic", noting that such frequent jams are particularly challenging for senior citizens. He mentioned instances where buses were delayed by over two hours, leaving elderly passengers without access to basic facilities.

Recurring Congestion Issues on the Ghat Section

The incident underscores a broader pattern of traffic problems in the ghat section of the expressway. Neeraj Kolge, a frequent traveler between Mumbai and Pune, commented on the routine nature of such disruptions. "Whether it's an accident, a vehicle breakdown, or the weekend rush, everyone who travels this route now anticipates a jam," he said, reflecting a common sentiment among regular commuters.

This event adds to ongoing concerns about highway safety and traffic management on one of Maharashtra's busiest corridors, prompting calls for improved infrastructure and response measures to mitigate future incidents.
