Telangana Ministers Clash With BJP Over State Budget and Funding
In a sharp rebuttal to the Bharatiya Janata Party's criticism of the Congress government's 2026-27 budget for Telangana, state ministers Ponnam Prabhakar and A Laxman launched a forceful counterattack, accusing the saffron party of political posturing and demanding concrete action on central funding.
Questioning BJP's Hindu Credentials
The ministers directly challenged the BJP's self-projection as superior Hindus, asserting that devotion to Lord Rama and Hindu identity transcend political affiliations. Ponnam Prabhakar dramatically recited a stanza from the Hanuman Kavacham praising Lord Rama and challenged BJP members to demonstrate similar scriptural knowledge.
"The BJP leadership must recognize that being Hindu isn't confined to party lines," Laxman stated emphatically, adding that he could recite slokas continuously for two hours to prove his religious devotion. He further pointed to the RSS's controversial history, suggesting the BJP's claims to religious superiority were unfounded.
Demanding Fair Resource Allocation
The ministers accused the central government of discriminatory treatment toward Telangana, contrasting it with neighboring Andhra Pradesh's success in attracting central funds. "Telangana is neither Pakistan nor Bangladesh," Prabhakar declared, objecting to what he characterized as systematic underfunding.
He posed pointed questions to BJP MLAs: "We are ready to discuss what the BJP has given Telangana in 12 years. Have you ever approached the prime minister about Telangana's needs?" The minister highlighted unfulfilled promises, including central schools and Navodaya educational institutions that never materialized despite commitments.
Call for Action Over Rhetoric
Prabhakar issued a direct challenge to BJP representatives: "While the Andhra Pradesh government is attracting funds, why haven't you stepped up to demand what we rightfully deserve? It's time for BJP leaders to bring funds to Telangana before they speak up."
The ministers urged BJP legislators to focus on securing increased central allocations rather than engaging in political criticism, framing the issue as one of equitable development rather than partisan politics.
Legislative Backing
Legislative affairs minister Sridhar Babu supported his colleagues, describing BJP floor leader Maheshwar Reddy's characterization of the Congress budget as a "cheat budget" as objectionable and unfounded. This unified front from the ruling party ministers signals a coordinated strategy to defend their budgetary proposals while shifting attention to central-state financial relations.
The confrontation highlights growing tensions between the Congress-led state government and the BJP-led central administration, with religious identity and resource allocation emerging as key battlegrounds in Telangana's political landscape.
