Sunetra Pawar Confronts Major Challenges as NCP President Amid Growing Controversies

In Pune, pressure is intensifying on Sunetra Pawar to make decisive moves regarding key party figures embroiled in scandals, as she marks one month as the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president. The spotlight is on Rupali Chakankar, the state chief of the NCP women's wing, and cabinet minister Narhari Zirwal, both of whom have landed in controversies that threaten to tarnish the party's image.

Unanimous Election and Immediate Challenges

Sunetra Pawar was unanimously elected as the NCP president on February 26, nearly a month after the tragic death of former party chief Ajit Pawar in a plane crash on January 28. While she also handles the responsibilities of deputy chief minister in the state cabinet, political observers believe she must take critical steps to revive the party's standing in the coming days.

Rupali Chakankar's Controversy and Internal Demands

A growing chorus within the NCP is calling for action against party functionaries like Rupali Chakankar, whose name has surfaced in the Nashik-based astrologer Ashok Kharat case. Office-bearers from Nashik, Ahilyanagar, and other units have formally written to Sunetra Pawar, urging Chakankar's removal from her post as state chief of the NCP's women wing.

Prerana Balkawade, chief of the Nashik NCP's women wing, expressed concern, stating, "NCP's image is getting tarnished after Chakankar's name was linked to the Kharat case. As party workers, we are finding it difficult to defend our own party, and therefore, I have written to Sunetra Vahini to remove Chakankar from the party's post." The opposition has also joined in, demanding accountability for Chakankar.

Narhari Zirwal's Fresh Controversy and Opposition Pressure

NCP cabinet minister Narhari Zirwal has found himself in a new controversy after a controversial video surfaced on social media on Wednesday. This comes on top of existing heat, as one of his department employees was arrested by the anti-corruption bureau during a raid in Mantralaya. Following the video's release, the opposition has called for his removal from the cabinet.

State Congress chief Harshwardhan Sapkal emphasized, "The video of Zirwal is an example of moral turpitude. The chief minister should immediately ask Zirwal to resign as a minister."

Political Analysis and Leadership Test

According to political observers, these controversies present serious challenges for Sunetra Pawar as she settles into her role as NCP president. Political analyst Prakash Pawar noted, "Sunetra got the responsibility to lead the party in an extraordinary situation. There are more challenges than opportunities for her. This is the time for Sunetra to show her mettle and take some tough decisions to prove her leadership and gain the confidence of her party workers."

As Sunetra Pawar navigates these turbulent waters, her ability to address these issues head-on will be crucial in shaping the NCP's future and restoring its credibility among supporters and the public alike.
